I've been watching the Pope's funeral occaisionally this morning mainly because there's nothing else on TV.

Now, I understand that a Pope's funeral is more important that a Crown Prince's second wedding. I do.

But when I see that only one person is separating that Crown Prince in the seating plan from Robert Mugabe ( Read more... )

Did they really do that? It's a bit rich, especially given that Zimbabwe is no longer a member of the tea-drinking Commonwealth.

Unless this is a Cunning Plan™ from the Vatican, intending to add to the amount of sweetness and light in the world. Perhaps persuade Mr Mugabe that not all British people want to decapitate him. And Mr Windsor that he can become a hero with one carefully-placed sword...

Funny how he would be a hero for killing someone but is 'TheEvil' for marrying Parker Bowles.

I think it's not A Grand Expression Of Evilitude, really. There's the backlash from those who idolised Mrs Diana Spencer-Windsor, but that's been completely inevitable since That Interview. And there's been a certain element of comparison with Mr Charles Windsor's last wedding, which was the biggest media event ever, in its day. And, of course, the growing republican element, who reckon "Ah, who cares."

This year's wedding has had a distinct air of shambles around it, and perhaps the bravest thing would have been for Mr Windsor to have said "Right, evidently someone doesn't want me to have this marriage right now. I'll leave it until June, and then we'll bally well do it properlyPart of this is down to Mr Windsor's public persona. He's seen - at least by those people whose views I hear - as a bit of a weakling, prone to temper tantrums, and not exactly doing anything to endear himself to the populace at large ( ... )
