Eco-Friendly Baby Gifts?

Mar 20, 2010 16:26

Hey all :-)

My cousin just had a baby boy and I'm looking for some good ideas for an environmentally friendly but also handy/functional baby gift. I'm sure she has tons of stuffed animals and clothes, so I'm looking for something more creative and useful... and of course, environmentally friendly. Any suggestions?

TIA!

Eco-friendly bottles are a nice, practical gift, and you can get her one of those handy drying racks to hold them on. I really like Think Baby stuff.

cloth diapers. Check in your area for a shop that sells used "all in One" cloth diapers. If you have a Costco card they have a great deal on Bum Genius diapers. or check Etsy.
or you can buy a package of "pre-folds" and 2 waterproof covers and a "snappi"
or a book about breastfeeding(as opposed to encouraging bottle feeding) and some tea for nursing mamas.
or a large container of eco friendly unscented detergent and a big spray bottle of BacOut.

cloth diapers seem pretty obvious. We have a local store called Shop Eco that sells biodegradable/bleach free disposable diapers that seem to be really awesome.

Third for the cloth diapers. One of the babies at my daycare has a one size fits all set and he never gets diaper rash! Besides being awesome for the environment, the increased airflow provided is good for children.

If your friend doesn't already own one, a food processor is great for making your own baby food instead of buying the packaged stuff.

If you'd like to be a bit extravagant, a steam cleaner is awesome for sanitizing all those surfaces baby will soon be crawling all over (and spitting up on, and putting in his/her mouth)with no, or minimal, chemical cleaners.

Maybe get some of those flushable/biodegradable wipies that don't sit in the landfils forever.
