Yeah, all that stuff.
Plus the darker revelations about Jayne's abusive father...
OH, also loved the whole 'River taking advantage of Jayne's backwater upbringing' LOL!

This was just a fun chapter to write as it was just looking at both Jayne and River as they get over what happened on Ariel. Jayne's accepted that River is going to be a part of his life and he wants her there (and he most certainly does not have any warm, fluffy feelings regarding her so you can just stop that line of thought right there and... -- see how easy it is for me to start writing in Jayne POV? It truly is my weakness). And then, there's River who is refusing to act like the victim, which of course is what Jayne lo -- likes about her ;)
Yeah - Jayne didn't have a really happy childhood in this story, but since he can't change it, there's really no use moping and whining about it. Unless River is taking advantage of his backwater upbringing to make him want to run for the hills screaming "WITCH!" Then, it's perfectly okay if Jayne bitches about his childhood.

This chapter made me grin like a goofy fool. Especially at lines like this:
She’d tied the other bracelet around his wrist before covering it with his leather brace, saying something about how he was her best and favourite secret out of all the others, and she had many. His heart did not start beating faster when she said that. It didn’t. She’d patted his cheek fondly.
That's me grinning like a fool at the image of River looking at Jayne fondly, you know, because he lives in denial and it's a cute look for him. Jayne did have a River sized hole in him, but he's all better now, right? Poor little River had a Jayne sized hole, which is a much harder space to fill seeing as how Jayne's so darn big.
Still smiling, by the way. Loved this chapter. It's great to have your pretty words again.

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. I had a lot of fun writing this chapter since it was just filled with Jayne and River acting like a couple of dorks/children.
Poor Jayne, he really does like living in denial - he thinks that it makes him look more badass. ;)

I'm not sure if he's all better yet, but he's getting there through both helping River and through his relationship with her. I'll be exploring some more of Jayne's own past in future chapters, as well as a oneshot detailing his relationship with Vera to further explore his own dark side. I think that that will help to show that Jayne needs River (a real purpose) just as much as River needs him.
Again, really glad you enjoyed it! :D

I also must confess. I inadvertently copied one of your story titles for my own. I kept wondering why "Little Girl Lost" stuck in my craw. Reading you story today reminded me.
My apologies.

No apologies needed - I actually got the title from the Pretty Deadly contest for the River-centric section, which is entitled "Little Girl Lost". I saw that title and instantly a fic was born. (P.S. I'm looking forward to seeing where you go with your own story!)

(I can only imagine that the Hunter brothers would feel equally dismayed by such piss-poor attention to the fine art of bounty-hunting . . . but I suppose sloppiness is only to be expected when someone with Early's psychotic and sadistic tendencies goes into the profession -- his own inner kinks get in the way of his professionalism.)

I bet you anything that the first thing Jayne does after the lovefest part of the family reunion is out of the way (the part where they beat each other up because they're all too manly to admit that they love each other or to hug), and when they've sat down for drinks is to tell the Hunter brothers about Jubal Early. Naturally, the Hunters will be shocked and appalled, which will lead to the three boys describing how they would have done it, right in the hearing of everyone else.

Oh, that would be brilliant! Do you see that as an interlude, or part of a chapter? :)
