Going to try and do something different this round. I roleplay Magica DeSpell in the community
dramadramaduck and, as seen in other posts, I plan to write a length fanfiction involving her, her family, and a fake marriage to Scrooge. Because I want to be as accurate as possible, I try to mesh together as many canons as possible - Carl Barks, Don Rosa, Ducktales, and other comics from around the world. In doing so, I've tried to construct an entire backstory for her, or at least a fan theory of how her life went. So I shall present this theory today!
Magica was born in Italy, in a small country villa. Her brother Poe was five years older than her, and already showing skill at magic. Magic is both a power and a commodity - the bought items only work so well as your faith in them. The DeSpells were a poor family, but their talent in magic was astounding. The DeSpell line was once very prosperous and grand, but when the money went down the drain, so did their prestige. Magica became very proud of her family, and vowed to one day help bring back their glory.
She reached up, as high as standing on tippy-toes would allow, and yet the wand, gripped in Poe's hand, was still out of reach. "It's not fair! Why can't I just use it for a little while?"
"Magic isn't a toy." Poe smirked, a little amused at the sibling's attempts."You heard Mama and Papa. When you're older, you can get your own practice wand. Why don't you go play with your dolls?"
The money problems became so bad, that Magica's mother and father couldn't afford to pay their taxes, and tried to resort to stealing embezzling, further shaming the family. The couple were arrested, and the children were sent to live with their grandmother. Magica became jealous of all the attention Granny bestowed upon Poe for his magical talents, and tried to prove herself by practicing her first spell and potion all on her own. Alas, she botched a few steps, and as a result, Poe was turned into a raven. No one knew how to cure him, and Granny could no longer teach Poe, so she now invested her time and effort into Magica's future. When Magica became old enough, she was sent to Romania to attend a magic school.
"Let me go, let me go!"She shrieked, trying to fight against Mim's grip."I can't let her talk about my family like that! I'll turn her into a warty toad!"
"Magica, dearie, think it over!" The violet one murmured, gentle. "You'll just get into trouble, and that's what these prissy girls want! You're better than that..."
She managed to make several friends in the academy, her best friend for life being Mad Madam Mim. Despite her great talent, she was harassed and picked on by students and teachers alike for how poor she was, and her shameful family. Magica decided the only way to restore the family name and find true happiness was to become rich. It was also during this time that Granny tried to convince Magica to marry Rosalino, a goose she had known back in her home country, who had a moderate amount of magical family, but came from a better class in the social hierarchy. Rosalino was head over heels in love with Magica, but she had no interest in romance and marriage, wanting to achieve fortune by her own hands. Granny and Rosalino would continue pressing on for this marriage, and Magica would reject it every time.
She rolled her eyes, adding a few more sprinkles of of ash into her cauldron. "Can you believe them? I have no time for marriage, and here they are, practically shoving me down the alter with Rosalino."
Mim casually flipped the pages of the spell book. "I know he's no catch, but you've never thought of getting married? There's no prince charming out there for you?"
A shake of her head. "Go back to reading fairy tales, those guys don't exist. If I ever had to shackle myself to some man... he'd have to be powerful, and courageous. He'd let nothing stand in his way. Tough, and smart..." And then, just to earn a smile out of her friend, add "And maybe tall, dark, and handsome to boot."
After graduation, Magica bought a small home near Mt. Vesuvius, and devoted her time to studying ancient spells, trying to find one that would lead her to the money she desired. This would be a very difficult task, however, as no one had ever heard of magic MAKING money, instead of magic being SOLD to make money. She allowed Poe to come and live with her, and save for the occasional visit to Mim and other friends, locked herself away to study and research. It took a long time, but she finally came upon the legendary Midas Touch Spell - it required the first coin earned by the richest man in the world, to be melted into an amulet that would give the wearer the ability to turn whatever they touched into gold. Of course, by that time, the richest man in the world, Scrooge McDuck, was internationally famous. Off to America, because surely such a rich guy could afford to hand over one little dime, right?
"You really want to stay with me?" She raised a brow, as the raven perched on her shoulder. "You DO remember I'm the reason you're stuck like that...?"
Poe nodded, but smiled, gentle. "Better you than with Granny. She's always keeping me cooped up and treating me more like a bird than her grandson... Besides, I'm your big brother, I'm supposed to watch out for my little sister." He stretched out a small wing to stroke Magica's hair, and that earned a sigh of submission from her.
... Well, we all know how that went. But she refused to give up - all of her problems could be solved with that dime, and she made it her mission in life to get it. She bought a house in Calisota, so that whenever she did have a plan to go after him, she had a place to prepare and attack from. Her Vesuvius house would be used for research. Granny and Rosalino continued to pressure her for marriage, but Magica still refused to relent, obsessing over the dime. Mim, trying to help out her friend, made her home available to Magica whenever she pleased, and even got her an apprentice, Samson Hex, a young boy who was clumsy but well-meaning, along with his little sister, Witch Child.
Witch Child tugged on Samson's shirt, her whining voice already grating. "Come on, can't I learn too? She can teach us both!"
The elder tried to ease her hand down. "You're not old enough... I only brought you along because Mom and Dad-"
"She can stay." Magica suddenly cut in. She did not say this to Samson, however - her eyes were on the little girl, seeing her past reflected before her.
While teaching her students, Magica realized that perhaps she could not snatch that dime all on her own. She began to look into Scrooge's past and see if she could find anyone who would be willing to help get revenge against him. These efforts resulted in her working together with the Beagle Boys, Flintheart Glomgold, and other villains. Her morals slipping, she began heavily involved in the criminal world, willing to work with anyone and offer any magic available in order to get that dime. She even managed to rope in Mim, the students, and her family into a few schemes, that all ultimately failed. Her heart grew cold, not caring for her friends, her family, or even herself, because all that mattered was getting the dime and becoming rich.
"How about this?" Granny wrapped an arm around Magica's shoulders, trying to pull her into a hug, but the grandchild wouldn't budge. "If this idea of yours works, and get the amulet... then you marry Rosalino."
The sorceress plucked the hand off with a few fingers, acting as if she had been touched by a slimy piece of seaweed. "Better idea. Hell freezes over, then I marry Rosalino. Just help me out with this, you have nothing better to do with your time. Either agree to it, or get out!"
Due to debilitating health problems, Magica's parents ultimately died in prison. When their deaths were announced, Magica became terrified she would end up just like them when she died - shameful, pitiful, alone, poor as dirt. She had neglected taking sufficient care of herself, and of those close to her, and it was really beginning to show. Though she tried to open up her clasped heart and take better care of herself, it did not ease on her obsession any. She even had a crystal ball, in both homes, which she used to watch Scrooge's movements whenever she had a free moment. During these years of scheming and going after him, she found herself understanding some of his actions, even coming to sympathize with him sometimes.
She ran her fingers over the names in the newspaper again, by now having done it so much that her fingers became stained with the ink. In the back of her head, questions piled up - when to tell Poe, who would arrange the funeral, how to handle Granny's reaction... Yet, for the most part, she was silent, and was aware of it. Shouldn't she be more upset over this? Tears, gnashing of the teeth, cursing the gods? ... But she couldn't even recall her parents faces, or their voices. These words said 'DeSpell', but the entire article could have been in a foreign language to her for all she cared.
Which brings us to 'present' Magica. Late thirties, reaching her forties, Magica has become one of Duckberg's top villains, infamous for her magic spells. Many other villains know just how to reach her, and for the right price, they can have her aide in a scheme. She has accidentally earned herself a few other suitors for her heart, but they have always been rejected, as she believes romance is nothing but a hindrance (and as a result, probably wouldn't know if she herself was in love until someone spelled it out for her), and Granny+Rosalino continue to try and pressure her into marriage. She still takes time to teacher her students and hang out with her friends, but most of her time is dedicated to research and attacks on Scrooge.
Well, that's all I could come up with. So enjoy. And have some Magica pictures I've collected over the years.
