“Who? Nakamaru Yuichi?”
Jin nodded and leaned in to understand the boy’s words.
“I don’t know that name”, the guy said and shrugged.
Jin frowned slightly. “But he’s usually doing the job you’re doing right now.”
“Ah!” The boy took a few glasses and put them to a shelf. “That guy. He quit last week.”
For a second, Jin just blinked his eyes. “Quit?”
“Yeah, he got a job somewhere else and quit pretty suddenly.”
“So, he’s not working here anymore?”
The boy shook his head. “He isn’t.”
Jin sighed and turned away, watched the crowd of people dancing and drinking, the loud noises mixing together and making his head ache.
He liked places like this, clubs and bars. Jin liked to go out and have fun, but this wasn’t fun anymore.
That damn guy had lied to him. He had said they would meet today, that he would be here, but as he had said that, he had long quit the job already.
How was Jin supposed to find him now?
Pissed off, he left the bar and made his way through the masses to get to the exit. He had his phone out already, when someone took his wrist and held him back. Jin turned and for a moment, he hoped to see Yuichi holding him back, but instead, it was Koki.
“I knew you’d be coming here again”, Koki said and pulled him into a corner.
“He’s not here”, Jin just said.
Koki shrugged. “Well, he’s probably having a shift tomorrow or...”
“No”, Jin said and glanced at the bar. “He quit.”
“So, he got you completely fooled.”
Jin nodded. “But the last word isn’t spoken. I’ll find him and I’ll make him explain this to me.”
Koki gave him a worried look. “Why are you going through so much trouble for that guy? He’s obviously not interested in you.”
“He’s just... have you seen his face?”
Koki smiled slightly. “Exactly your type, yeah.”
“I have to get to know him. There’s just something about him”, Jin explained. “The way he looked at me, his smile, that reluctant attitude.”
“Aren’t you going to lose interest once you’ll have him?”
Jin stared at Koki for moment, then he shrugged. “How would I know that now?”
Koki only laughed at it.
That was just typically Jin.
Kazuya wasn’t used to having so much time. With his new job in the hotel, he could spend the whole week doing nothing but his assignments for university and have the rest of the remaining time to himself.
It was only about a month left, until he would finish, graduate from university and Kazuya honestly couldn’t wait for it.
For a while loner, he would keep doing the job in the hotel. Any kind of experience was valuable, so he didn’t mind spending some more time in that job. He had only just started, however.
Now, he just sat in a cafe, after his last lecture for today had ended. Kazuya liked sitting in crowded places and watching people, and as the weather was really nice today, too, he enjoyed it even more.
Having just a coffee and a book to read with him, he stretched his legs at one of the tables outside. The cafe was directly in high street and he had a good view on everything.
That was why he noticed Jin the very moment, he came into sight.
He left one of the shops, a small bag in his hand and a hat covering the dark brunette locks.
Even his clothes looked extremely expensive, Kazuya thought and raised a brow. That guy was just one of a kind - a rich kid, who apparently couldn’t get enough.
Kazuya turned his head, as Jin walked into the direction of the cafe. He could only hope Jin wouldn’t take notice. After all, Kazuya had thought he had finally gotten rid of that man.
Sipping his coffee, Kazuya looked into the other direction, but it didn’t take a minute, before he felt Jin approaching him.
“Yuichi?”
Kazuya pulled a face, before he turned with a slight smile. “Ah, Akanishi-san.”
Jin remained looking at him for a moment, then he sat down.
“Please, take a seat”, Kazuya commented dryly.
“You lied to me.” Jin crossed his legs and gave Kazuya a sharp look.
In that moment, Kazuya felt like freezing; his hands went numb and he raised his look to Jin, staring. “I... I can explain everything.”
“You better would”, Jin said and looked at the waitress, as she came and asked for his order. “Coffee, please.”
Kazuya bit his lip and waited until she was gone. “I am very sorry for lying”, he apologised then, lowered his head.
Jin raised a brow. “You easily answered that you’d be there and that we would meet in that club again and then, I came there and they just told me you’d quid.”
Kazuya blinked his eyes, before he raised his head. “You’ve been to the club again?”
Jin laughed slightly. “On Saturday, as every week before. And you haven’t been there.”
“I...” Kazuya shrugged.
“You’ve got a new job, I heard that.”
Kazuya was too perplex to actually process everything. So, Jin hadn’t found out a single thing about him? It was only that he hadn’t been working in the club anymore and Jin could not have met him that night? Nothing else?
“You really are a tough one”, Jin commented. “It was clever, but look”, he said and grinned, “I easily found you again.”
Kazuya swallowed. Would Jin find him that easily in his hotel bar, too?
The waitress brought a cup of coffee for Jin. “So, what is your new job?”
In some way, Kazuya just had to get rid of him. He cleared his throat, before he answered: “I don’t have one.”
“What? You don’t have any job? But at that club they told me...”
“I lied to them”, Kazuya interrupted Jin. “I lied about that.”
“Why did you quit?”
Shrugging, Kazuya leaned back. Someone as rich as Akanishi Jin wouldn’t waste his time and money on a job-less kid, who didn’t know how to be serious about life, would he? Kazuya just had to pull off that image really well and Jin would hopefully leave him alone. Finally.
“I was tired of it. I hate working. I decided to stay at home from now on.”
Jin frowned. “I am working in a hotel, you know”, he offered then. “It would be easy for me to get you a position there.”
Kazuya smiled politely and emptied his cup, before he got up and collected his things. “No, thanks, I don’t want to work.” He put some money to the table. “Thanks for trying, but I am not interested, really.”
Walking off slowly, Kazuya left Jin behind and this time, he hoped it was for good.
He should have known better, as Jin caught up and took his hand, shoving the bill Kazuya had left back to it.
“You better keep this”, he said. “You’ll need it.”
Kazuya could only stare at him. Was that guy serious?
“I paid your coffee. So, where are we going next?” Jin seemed all excited and pointed at a shop.
“You don’t have to pay for my coffee”, Kazuya said and turned. Unbelievable, he thought and felt anger stirring up in him. How did that guy dare to treat him like that?
Jin held him back, however, pulling Kazuya in by his wrist. “Really, it’s just a coffee.”
“Right, it’s just a coffee”, Kazuya agreed and gave him an angry glare. “I can pay that little myself.”
“Keep it for something better”, Jin just said and pulled him along.
Kazuya fought it for a moment, then, he felt stupid and gave up. He had provoked it himself, hadn’t he, playing the job-less, poor boy?
He sighed and wondered how exactly he had gotten into this, as Jin dragged him into a shop. Just looking at all those things, Kazuya knew they were too expensive for him.
He wasn’t poor or anything, but he had to watch his money. Unlike Jin, he couldn’t just go off and buy whatever he liked.
“Okay, what do you need?”
Kazuya threw Jin a look. “Pardon?”
“I’ll buy you whatever you need, so just pick what you like.” Jin smiled.
“If you’re thinking you could lure me in with your money - no chance”, Kazuya informed him. “I am not interested in your money.”
“I’d hoped so”, Jin answered and took a shirt, looking at it from different angles. “This is not to impress you or anything. Just, shopping makes a date complete, doesn’t it?”
Kazuya couldn’t help, but laugh. “Date?” he grinned and snatched the shirt from Jin’s hand to look at it himself. “When did we start dating?”
Jin grinned and leaned in, bringing his lips close to Kazuya’s ear. “Right in the moment I paid for your coffee.”
Kazuya gasped and pouted, but Jin just grinned in that innocent and cute way, before he drew back.
“I don’t need you to buy me anything.”
Jin made a face of appreciation. “Your boyfriend does a lot for you, I guess. If you don’t even need to work.”
Kazuya distracted himself by looking at some more clothes. “Not at all. I don’t like depending on others.”
“How do you make ends meet without a job then?”
“It somehow works out”, Kazuya lied.
“Do you live together with that boyfriend?”
“No.”
“You don’t seem too attached”, Jin noticed. “It’ll be an easy job to snatch you from him.”
Kazuya rolled his eyes. “I’m not breaking up with him.”
“You will.”
“I’m not interested in you, just in case you didn’t hear it the last twenty times I said it.”
Jin grinned. “You’ll be surprised how soon that will change.”
Kazuya didn’t answer anymore, as he got tired of it. He really had no idea, how he had gotten into this - being in a shopping centre with Jin on something that appeared to be a date.
“You know”, Jin said and walked next to Kazuya slowly. “If you like that better, we can be friends first.”
“It’s not like I would forget what your true intention is.” Kazuya looked at a few watches in a showcase.
“But by being friends we can easily find out, if there’s any potential for more.”
“Well, apparently, you’ve figured as much for you already, so what’s the use?”
Jin grinned. “I just wanted to be a gentleman.”
“And make me at least believe I had any choice to make a decision on my own?” Kazuya gave Jin a look. “I am not that stupid, Akanishi.”
“You can call me Jin.”
Kazuya shook his head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. I wouldn’t want people to think I am overly familiar with you.”
“It’s just a name, you know.” Jin gave him an amused look.
“In that case it shouldn’t matter what I call you. Akanishi”, Kazuya added.
Jin didn’t argue that any further and let Kazuya have his mind.
They spent almost an hour walking around shops and eventually, Kazuya ended up going to a restaurant with Jin.
He had not thought so, but spending time with Jin was actually quite pleasant. He was humorous and clever and despite all the innocent and selfish talking, he made a quite grown-up impression on Kazuya.
“What is it like to work for such a huge hotel company”, Kazuya asked, as a waiter poured them some wine. Jin had picked an Italian restaurant, insisting on inviting Kazuya.
“It’s a whole lot of work. You have to structure everything to match it to the guests’ expectations and that’s not always that easy.” Jin shrugged and lifted his glass.
Kazuya did the same and tried some of the wine. It was really good; he didn’t think he had ever had wine like that before.
“Do you have an interest in hotel management?”
Kazuya glanced at Jin shortly, before he shrugged. “Not really.”
“What are you interest in?” Jin leaned in; soft music was playing in the background, something classic, as Kazuya noticed.
“Cooking”, he answered. “Sports, especially baseball, some music.”
Jin nodded. “You can cook?”
“A little.” The waiter brought their antipasti and Kazuya eyed the food in front of him. “Do you always just pick the most expensive out of everything?”
Jin smiled. “I always just pick what I fancy most.” He shrugged and took a bite. “It doesn’t have to be expensive, it just has to meet my expectations.”
Kazuya didn’t comment on that and rather turned the conversation to something less intimate.
After they finished, they walked to the train station together and Kazuya had to admit that the day had been good. He had enjoyed every single second of it.
Still, he didn’t quite understand how he had gotten into it in the first place, but it had been good.
“I need to take this train”, Kazuya said and stopped at an underground station entrance.
“Shall I bring you home?” Jin stopped, too.
“That’s not a good idea.” By all means, Jin wasn’t allowed to find out where Kazuya lived. That would only mean more trouble.
“Your boyfriend better shouldn’t see us, right?” Jin smiled and stepped closer. “And are we finishing off this date properly?”
Kazuya blinked at Jin. He had forgotten about that lie about having a boyfriend again and it got him off guard, so Jin managed to steal a quick kiss.
“Good night, Yuichi”, he said and smiled slightly, before he turned and walked off.
Kazuya just stayed where he was and tried to order his thoughts. His lips still tingled from that short peck and he couldn’t stop himself from reaching up to touch them with his fingertips.
Yuichi, he thought and let go of a shaky breath. Jin still didn’t know his real name.
This was getting worse; Kazuya had lost control of it. And there was nothing he could do about it. Jin wouldn’t understand, if Kazuya told him the truth after all this. Jin wouldn’t understand a thing.
Jin wouldn’t ever smile at him like that again, wouldn’t spend another afternoon with him and for sure, Kazuya wouldn’t get to know what a real kiss from Jin would be like.
It was too late to tell the truth.
It was Friday evening and Jin had just come back from a meeting. It had been rather boring, so Jin had wasted his time with looking up Yuichi on the internet.
He had not been able to find any pictures of him, but he had found an address. There weren’t many Nakamaru Yuichi’s living out there and only one of them lived near-by.
So, following an instinct, Jin had decided to just stop by at that address after the meeting, as it was on his way, however.
He looked at the apartment building from his car. It looked rather average, not a dirty, run-down place, as Jin had imagined. It wasn’t anything fancy, but a normal apartment house in a pretty normal neighbourhood.
Jin got off the car and walked up the stairs, checking the numbers, as he reached the right floor.
120 - Ishida, 119 - Odagiri, 118 - Kanzaki, 117 - Kamenashi, 116 - Takano, 115 - Kiritani, 114- Hatanaka and finally, Jin thought and stopped, 113 - Nakamaru.
He ran a hand through his hair, before he rang the bell and waited. Steps were heard from inside and Jin frowned, as he heard a woman’s voice.
“Yes, please?” A pretty girl with long brunette hair opened the door. She wore a pink skirt and a white shirt with a ribbon.
Jin blinked at her. Sister? “I wanted to talk to Yuichi”, he said and watched her face.
She blinked at him once, before she opened the door further for him to come in. “Are you a friend of his?”
Jin nodded. “You could say that.”
“Just a moment, I’ll get him!” She got into her slippers and went back in. “Yucchi”, she said and Jin frowned at that. “There’s someone here to see you.”
Jin waited for a moment longer, before a guy came into the corridor and looked at him with curious eyes.
He had short, dark hair and small eyes, full lips and stared at Jin in confusion.
“Nakamaru Yuichi?”
The guy nodded. “Sorry. Do I know you?” The girl stood behind him and a hand gripped his arm, as if she was alarmed.
Jin shook his head. “I guess I’ve made a mistake”, he said. “I am very sorry for intruding.” He bowed his head and turned to leave.
Nakamaru stared at the door, as it closed and frowned, turning.
“Who was that?” The girl bit her lip. “He’s probably a burglar and just wanted to check on the flat. He’s just waiting for a time, when you’re gone and then...”
“Yuri”, Nakamaru said and rolled his eyes. “What are you coming up with again?”
She pouted. “Don’t you think that was strange?”
Nakamaru smiled slightly, before he placed a kiss to her forehead, then he looked back over his shoulder to the door and tilted his head slightly. “I somehow feel like I have seen his face before.”
In the meanwhile, Jin had gotten back to his car.
Another one? He sat in the driver’s seat and stared out of the windscreen. Was there another Nakamaru Yuichi living so close by, as well? But why couldn’t he have found the address of Yuichi?
Jin leaned back and for a moment, he tilted his head and frowned.
Could it be, because Yuichi didn’t have a home? He was probably homeless and that was the reason, Jin couldn’t find him.
Then again, he was probably just living with his parents and that was the reason, Jin couldn’t find his residence.
He drove off again and wondered, why exactly he just hadn’t asked for Yuichi’s number, when they had met last time. It would have been a lot easier to get in touch.
This way, Jin had to wait for the next coincidence to run into Yuichi once again.
He arrived at the hotel and went to reception first, looking through some mails and letters in the office at the back. He talked to the receptionist for a while, listened to what had been happening that day, before he went looking for the housekeeper, as there had occurred a few problems.
“What a day”, he said, after another hour and sat down at the bar. It was almost nine in the evening and Jin had decided to just have a drink and a talk with his friend.
Yamashita smiled at him and placed a cold, freshly pressed fruit juice in front of him.
“Are you kidding me”, Jin asked and frowned at the glass.
“You’re going to drive back home, aren’t you?”
“I could just stay here tonight, as I’ll have to be here tomorrow at eight, however. There’s a problem with the chambermaids that I have to talk through with them.”
Yamashita polished a few glasses. It was rather quiet tonight, what left him some time to talk to Jin. “Why? Something’s wrong with the rooms?”
Jin shrugged. “Apparently, a few guests complained that the carpets aren’t dusted or something. The housekeeper wasn’t here anymore, when I came earlier and I don’t want to call her this late. I’ll talk to her in the morning, before they go up, into the rooms.”
Yamashita nodded. “Reminds me”, he said then. “You haven’t met Kazuya yet.”
“Kazuya?” Jin tilted his head. “Who is that?”
“I told you I hired someone to help me out here, didn’t I?”
“Ah, that”, Jin answered and looked around. “Isn’t he here?”
“He’s in the kitchen, slicing lemons.” Yamashita leaned in to Jin and grinned. “You’ll like him.”
Jin returned the smirk. “So, he’s a pretty one?”
Yamashita nodded. “Completely your type.”
“Ah”, Jin said and leaned back , a hand over his chest. “That’ll be hard for me, as I put all my cards on that one guy right now.”
Yamashita blinked. “Really? Who is it?”
“Some mysterious guy. He’s not easy to find, I can tell you.”
“Did you even meet him then?” Yamashita laughed.
Jin smiled. “Yes, a few times. He has a boyfriend and makes a secret out of everything. But he’s just attracting me so much. Pretty face, cold attitude.”
“Exactly the challenge you’re always looking for”, Yamashita added.
It was what Kazuya heard, when he came back. A single look was enough to see Jin at the counter, laughing slightly, his posture relaxed. Kazuya turned and ran back into the kitchen.
“Did you forget anything”, one of the chefs asked.
Kazuya murmured something about “Ice” and went to the back of the kitchen.
Damn, he was done for. Jin would see him and he would ask questions and he would find out everything and then, he would ... Kazuya lifted his head and stared at the door.
He would fire Kazuya.
Of course, if he was one of the managers here, he could fire anyone. And finding out Kazuya had lied that much, had fooled around with Jin like that, he would do the only thing possible - fire Kazuya.
“Kazuya?”
He turned as he saw Yamashita coming into the kitchen.
“What are you doing?”
“I am just finished with the lemons. I thought we could need some more ice?” Kazuya swallowed thickly.
Yamashita added. “We do. Good you noticed. “He pointed behind himself. “Get the ice and then come back. A group of seven just came in and I need you out there.”
“Yes”, Kazuya answered and sighed, before he filled a small container with ice cubes and took the bowl with lemons then.
He had to face this, there was nothing he could do about it.
In front of the door to the bar, he hesitated for a second, then he opened it and walked in, his head slightly lowered and put the bowl and container to the worktop.
“Can you go and take their orders?” Yamashita was busy pouring drinks for another table.
Kazuya nodded and turned - seeing Jin was gone.
He blinked his eyes and felt his tension loosen up, before he threw Yamashita a look.
“What’s wrong? Did you forget how to take an order?”
“No, sorry”, Kazuya answered and went over to the table of seven. When he came back and started to prepare the drinks Yamashita watched him and nodded, as Kazuya was finished, giving his okay that he could take the drinks to the table like that.
“You’re learning fast”, he commented, when Kazuya came back.
“Thanks.”
“I wanted you to meet a friend of mine, but you were busy in the kitchen and he got a call and had to leave”, Yamashita said.
“A friend”, Kazuya asked.
“Well, actually, he’s the owner of this hotel.”
Kazuya stared at Yamashita for a moment. Owner? What was that about? He had thought Jin was only a manager here.
“Okay, his dad is the owner, but he’s going to take over in a few years. We’ve been friends since school”, Yamashita added.
Kazuya nodded and swallowed thickly. “Redline”, he murmured then. Of course, Redline, Akanishi - it made sense.
“I told him that I made a really good decision giving you this job and he wants to meet you next time. Akanishi makes a point of knowing who is working for their hotel.”
Kazuya nodded.
Yamashita grinned at him. “Don’t be so nervous about it. You’re doing a good job, there are no complaints and Jin is a really nice guy. He’ll like you.”
Kazuya wasn’t too sure about that anymore. “So, he’s like... my boss?”
“Exactly. But you couldn’t have any better boss. He’s doing a great job in managing this hotel. You couldn’t have a more comfortable stay in The Four Seasons.”
Kazuya smiled at that. “That’s how you should run a hotel. Make it the best there is.”
Yamashita frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”
Kazuya smiled slightly. “Actually, I am just about to finish my academic studies in Hotel Management.”
For a moment, Yamashita just gave him a puzzled look. “You’re studying hotel management?”
Kazuya nodded. “Yes, next month, I’ll have my final exam and then, I’ll be finished.”
“So, working here is a really lucky chance for you!”
“What do you mean?”
Yamashita grinned. “I could talk to Jin ad ask him, if it’s possible for you to take an work placement here. It’s easy, if I recommend you. Jin would do anything I ask him for.”
Kazuya could imagine that much. Jin was the type of guy luring everyone in like that, making an effort to make sure, if he failed getting someone, he could always turn back to one of the others.
“I really...”
“Well, fist of all, you have to finish your exam, of course, but it wouldn’t be any problem asking them to let you at least work in other parts of this hotel.” Yamashita looked through the room, checking on every table. “After all, that’s the best practical training you can get.”
“That’s right”, Kazuya said. But if Jin would find out about what he was studying, he would sink deeper into those problems.
“A work placement at this hotel - everyone would take you in, after that. It’s the best thing that could happen to you.”
Kazuya smiled and waved a hand slightly. “You don’t need to trouble yourself for me like that. I don’t want to bother you.”
“It’s not a bother”, Yamashita answered. “I’ll ask Jin next time I see him. Well, he’s going to want to meet you first, but it shouldn’t be a problem, really.”
Trouble, Kazuya thought and didn’t know what else to say than “Thank you”.
This was some serious trouble.
“Is there anything you have to tell me, Kazuya?”
He turned his head and looked at Nakamaru, as he sat down next to Kazuya. He knew in an instant, from just looking at his friend, that he had found out.
“Well...”
“It took me a while, but eventually, I remembered where I had seen that face before.” Nakamaru lifted a brow, waiting for Kazuya to answer him.
“What face?” Kazuya tried to act innocent.
“Friday evening, a guy came to my flat and asked for me. Yuri-chan let him in.”
Kazuya bit his lip. “What guy?”
“When I came to see him, he just looked at me and said that he had made a mistake and apologised, before he left again.” Nakamaru crossed his arms. “But he had asked Yuri for me.”
Kazuya closed his eyes and sighed. “Akanishi Jin?”
“Yes, it was him. How come that guy knows my name and comes to my flat?”
“He’s...” Kazuya should have known. He should have known that rich kid would look up the name and find an address. “I guess he wanted to see me.”
“Then, why didn’t he ring the bell three doors down left side of the corridor?”
Kazuya shrugged and looked at Nakamaru. “Because he thinks my name was Nakamaru Yuichi?”
Nakamaru frowned at him. “What the....?”
“I couldn’t tell him my real name, when he asked me at the club, okay? It’s always easier and safer to make up a fake name and yours came into mind first.”
“Nakamaru Yuichi is not a fake name, Kazuya”, he reminded him.
“I know.” Kazuya shrugged. “I’m sorry.”
“Yuri’s going to freak out, if he comes back. She thought he was shading our flat, waiting for me to be gone to break in.” He leaned back.
“That girl’s really paranoid.”
Nakamaru just threw him a look. “That’s none of your problems. You better get things straight with that Akanishi.”
Kazuya clicked his tongue and made an annoyed expression. “I guess I should.”
“Honestly...”, Nakamaru just murmured, before the lecture started.
Kazuya couldn’t really listen, couldn’t concentrate.
In his head, he was creating different scenarios of what would happen, if Jin found out about him.
He’d lose his job, the chance of that work placement and Heaven forbid - Jin.
Kazuya had not thought so, but by now, he felt pretty attracted by Jin. Something about that bold attitude, that behaviour of a rich guy and his innocent talking had made Kazuya somehow fall for him.
Not completely, but enough to want more.
It was only a matter of time, Kazuya thought now and dropped his pen, stared at his paper. It was only a matter of time, until he’d be exposed.
Until he would lose Jin.
