Chapter 2: From the Beginning
“And I said how really stupid I think that is. I mean, is it really necessary to put all your stuff into one single wardrobe? He organizes all his stuff and then tells me how unorganized he thinks I am. But I am not unorganized; I am just normal. Don’t we just all push our worn clothes beneath the bed from time to time or just put everything into the drawers, so that it looks superficially tidy?”
Kazuya threw Ohkura a slightly amused look and frowned then.
“But Sakurai really thinks he had to put all his things tidily and correctly into his drawers--- just in case someone could come in and open them to check his underwear or something. He even sorts them from colour and kind.”
“Well, that couldn’t happen to you if it’s all under your bed”, Toma commented.
Kazuya leaned in to Yamashita who was sitting next to him. “Does he always talk that much?”
“Nothing could stop Yokoyama-kun from talking.”
“But I still find everything, so there’s no need for me to sort my things from anything”, he said just now to Toma, who was sitting at the head of the table. Next to Yokoyama was Ohkura, staring out of the window. “In a way I am organized after all. Only a genius manages the chaos.”
“That’s why Sakurai-kun is a student council and not you”, Yamashita answered him.
The black-haired gave him an “Oi!” and pouted then.
“He somehow reminds me of a stubborn kid.” Ohkura turned his head, a frowning expression towards Yokoyama.
“That’s probably because he is one.”
They all laughed at the oldest one who tried to stop them making fun of him.
“Tegoshi is taking extra curses in psychology and claims that Yoko-kun has something called Peter Pan Syndrome”, Toma said to Ohkura.
“Means, he’ll never grow up”, Yamashita added.
Kazuya frowned even more now. “In a way, that’s really sad.”
They continued to make fun of Yokoyama and at some point Ohkura’s thoughts drifted off again and he watched the door; checking who was entering the room.
For some odd reason it had been very easy to get into this and to build up bonds with all the other guys. Yamashita had practically dragged him and Kazuya along to all kind of meetings and such. Like today. They had the morning off and instead of everyone sleeping longer, most of them were meeting here in the cafeteria to talk and hang out together.
Ohkura hadn’t wanted this, but somehow he had gotten to know nearly everyone by now and had started to like it at the school.
Though, unfortunately, that didn’t count for his room mate. They still barely talked and if, the older one would make sarcastic remarks or treat him, Ohkura, so utterly cold.
The brunette didn’t know how to handle Ryo at all.
As the door opened again, he raised an eyebrow. “This is an all guys school, isn’t it?”
Kazuya followed his gaze; the rest didn’t even bother to look up.
“Look closely”, Yokoyama just said.
“You spent so much time with him already, you should not mistake him anymore.” Toma kept flipping through the pages of his book. He reached his hand out for his cup and raised his gaze as his hand touched Yamashita’s, who had been reaching for the cup as well.
“Eh?!” Ohkura turned completely and stared at the person who was coming over now. “Yasuda-kun?”
“Yassan mostly wears skirts in his free time.” Toma pulled his hand back and let Yamashita have the coffee. “Did you drink up yours already?”
The younger one nodded. “I thought you wouldn’t mind…?”
He shook his head and smiled slightly before he occupied himself with his book again. “You can have it; I can order a new one for me later.”
Kazuya noticed the conversation between them and gave Yamashita a worried look who, for some odd reason, seemed hurt. But then he turned his head as Yasuda took the seat next to him.
“Good Morning!”
Ohkura was still staring at him.
All bouncy, the blonde smiled sweetly. “I’m going to go shopping with Tsuyoshi-kun and Masuda today!”
“Uhm…” Kazuya forced a smile. “That’s nice.” Those three were the ones with the most dubious style in his mind. The blue and pink smiling cherries were looking at Kazuya from Yasuda’s shirt.
“I met Akanishi-kun just now at the corridor and he made fun of me again. He doesn’t have any respect.”
Toma smiled at him. “Akanishi just thinks he’s much cooler than anyone in this world. Don’t bother.”
“I tell you he wouldn’t think that if he had to share a room with Sakurai-kun.” Yamashita gave Yokoyama an annoyed look. “What?”, the older one asked. “It’s really bothersome to share a room with that guy.”
Kazuya laughed and as he turned his head his eyes automatically met another pair of eyes through the thin glass of the window. He stared at the dark-haired boy he hadn’t noticed so far and the other one stared back. For a moment, both of them couldn’t move, just looked at each other, then the one outside got distracted from the friend he was with.
“Ah, talking of the devil!” Yasuda pointed at the group of three outside and they all turned their heads.
“Is Ryo-chan trying to get into the soccer club this year?”, Toma asked and Yamashita nodded.
“Jin is helping him training, so they use the mornings. Apparently, Uchi joined them, too.”
Ohkura titled his head. “There’s a soccer club?”
“Yeah, we have a lot of clubs, actually. You’ll have to choose one by next week, I think”, Yasuda explained.
Kazuya watched them walking away, but the dark-haired one didn’t turn again. Jin, he thought and faced back to the table; his look had been really intensive.
“What are you good at, Kame-chan?”
He titled his head to Yasuda who had asked him. “I don’t know… you mean for the clubs?”
The blonde nodded and pointed at Yokoyama. “We’re going to apply for the drama club.”
“Are you good actors?” Ohkura wanted to know.
Yokoyama shrugged his shoulders. “There’s just nothing else I like I haven’t done yet.”
“This school is so abnormal. Changing your club activities every year; do you really learn something this way?”
“It doesn’t really matter”, Yamashita explained. “There are clubs which you’d find unreasonable in the first place. What good is that magic club for?”
Toma grinned. “I’m sure Ninomiya had a lot of good reasons to found that one.”
Kazuya sighed. “Pretty sure.”
“However, you’ll have to make a decision and apply by next week”, Yasuda now said.
“Is there a baseball club?”
He nodded. “You’re good at baseball, Kame-chan?”
“I’ve played in a team for a long time”, the brunette answered. “I’d love to join the team.”
“Then you should apply. Actually, our sports teams are all quite good, aren’t they?” Yasuda threw a look at Yamashita.
“I think so”, the younger one answered. “I am the captain of the school’s basketball team; we’re pretty good.”
Toma snorted lightly. “Pretty good. You guys win all your games.”
Yokoyama nodded. “They really do. The baseball team is doing well, too, but a lot of them graduated last year, so they’ll need some new players; some good ones.”
“And the soccer team is more a club of handsome guys, but they’re quite good, too.” Toma turned his head as the door was opened and closed behind Tegoshi with a loud sound. He raised an eyebrow. “And their star just entered the room.”
“Pi-sama!”
Yamashita rolled his eyes as he looked at the younger one. “What’s the matter, Tegoshi-kun?”
“It’s bad; you really need to help me.” The small brunette pouted as he sat down next to Yokoyama. “You’re my class’ representative, so you can go and tell them that it’s necessary for me to be in the soccer club.”
Everyone looked at him now.
“What do you mean? They don’t want you in the team anymore? But you’re really good, aren’t you?” Yasuda seemed confused.
“That’s not it. I really am good; the best one.” Apparently, Tegoshi didn’t care for sounding arrogant. “They want to give my position to Akanishi-kun.”
“He’d be good for the position”, Toma said. “He plays calmer than you.”
“To Akanishi”, the younger one just repeated. “They want to give my position to Akanishi, so that I can join the arts club.”
Ohkura and Kazuya seemed to be the only ones being impressed.
“Wow, are you that good at arts they can force you to join?, Kazuya asked.
“That’s not it”, Yamashita said to him with a smile. “It’s more like they don’t want him to waste all his free time with soccer when his grades in arts are that bad.”
“He’s going to fail this year if he doesn’t get better in arts”, Yokoyama explained.
Tegoshi folded his arms in front of his chest and pouted. “Art is so not important at all.”
“But soccer is?”
“Of course it is.” He looked at Yamashita again, his eyes pleading. “Please, talk to them and make them let me stay in the soccer team. I can manage to do soccer and arts.”
The older one sighed. “Okay, okay. I’ll talk to them about it.”
Now Tegoshi’s face beamed up. “Thank you, Pi-sama!”
Ohkura and Kazuya just exchanged that look again. Most of the people at this school were just strange.
A few days later, after he came back from the first half of his classes for the day, Ohkura thought about taking a short nap before his afternoon curses would begin.
He had thought about what to do for club activities, but so far he couldn’t come up with something he really was interested in. He’d do sports, but after hearing how Kazuya had talked about baseball and how Tegoshi had been enthralled for soccer he felt as if there was no sport he had the right attitude for. He liked sports, but there was none he actually loved.
Tired, he settled on his bed and sighed, staring at the ceiling. As the door opened, he didn’t even bother to move his head. He hadn’t greeted Ryo once from the very beginning and so the older one had not greeted him in return. They never really talked; they just shared this room and occasionally talked when it was necessary.
“Don’t leave your things lying around there”, Ohkura had started a conversation once. It had ended in a fight with cold silence afterwards.
“Don’t always forget to lock the damn door”, Ryo usually said when he talked to Ohkura.
They really weren’t making any effort to get along.
Ryo threw him only a short look as he put his bag to his bed; then he opened his wardrobe to pull out a jacket.
Ohkura turned to his side and watched him for a moment, then he pushed himself to speak up. “Which club is best to join if I don’t know what sport to do and all I can think of what I really like is food?”
For a moment, Ryo didn’t move, then he turned and stared at the younger one in disbelieve. “Are you serious?”
“I have to join a club, don’t I?” Sitting up, Ohkura avoided looking at the black-haired boy. “I don’t know which one.”
“And you’re asking me?”
It probably had been a mistake to talk. They probably weren’t meant to get along. But knowing, he would stay here for a long time and would spend this room for a whole year with Ryo, Ohkura wanted to make the atmosphere between them more comfortable.
But, in point of fact, right now, it just felt even more awkward.
“I thought, you’d probably know something.”
Ryo just gave him a frown and then turned again, taking his wallet out of his bag and putting it into another one. He then collected other things from his drawers before he walked over to the door. His bag over his shoulder he turned to Ohkura once more and shrugged his shoulders. “If you like food, Twiggy, you should probably try the cooking club.”
Ohkura frowned as the older one left the room and kept silent. Twiggy, he thought and snorted. He didn’t look that famished at all; after all, he loved to eat, but he didn’t have to do much to keep his weight.
But, actually, Ryo didn’t look like he was eating at all and Ohkura wondered why that made him worry. He somehow felt the urge to find out what kind of food Ryo liked and make sure he got enough of it.
It irritated him that much that he rolled over in his bed with a frustrated moan; he felt uncomfortable with that situation between them. He wanted to change it, but it felt like he couldn’t, since they had started off completely wrong from the beginning.
He didn’t think Ryo was interested in becoming friends.
Ohkura sat up and sighed. He wasn’t able to nap anymore, so he decided to just go over to the biology rooms and wait there for classes to start. He’d make some homework in the meanwhile or just listen to some music, he decided and grabbed his bag walking out of the room.
As the door snapped in, he totally forgot to turn and lock it.
“Toma!”
The light brunette turned, seeing Yamashita running towards him. He smiled. “Hey. What’s the matter?”
The younger one stopped as he reached him and clumsily fidgeted the grip of his bag. “Where are you going?”
“Just out for a while”, Toma answered without any changing of expression.
“I’m going to come with you, okay?”
The smile faded. “Ah, well… You have afternoon classes now, don’t you?”
Yamashita nodded. “I’d skip them.”
“I don’t want you to. After all you’re a class representative. You shouldn’t skip classes.”
“But…”, the younger one started and turned quickly, as Uchi called him from the other end of the corridor. “You’re always disappearing like that. What are you doing?”
The smile returned and Toma threw Uchi a short look, before he leaned in and placed a short peck to Yamashita’s lips. “You worry too much. I’ll see you at the party tonight.”
Yamashita stayed were he was as Toma turned and walked off. He couldn’t help the pout and sighed as he turned away, too.
This was frustrating. They’d been together for more than a year now, but lately Toma seemed to hide things from him. He didn’t like the feeling; he had started to distrust Toma in everything he did, because he felt like he was betraying Yamashita.
Uchi waited for him and gave him a curious look. “Jin told me he often skips classes lately.”
The brunette only nodded.
“Do you think he’s doing something illegal?”
“I don’t know.”
Uchi sighed. “At least, he should…”
“It doesn’t matter”, Yamashita interrupted him and walked ahead. “I don’t really care for it.”
With a sorrowful look the younger one followed him, but didn’t answer.
As they reached the room for biology, Ohkura was already sitting there with Masuda, talking. No one else had been as early, so it was just the four of them.
“Ohkura-kun”, Uchi said and took the seat in front of him. “Are you going to come to the party tonight?”
With a nod, Ohkura leaned in. “I think so. Are those parties fun?”
“Usually. This one is to welcome all of you newbies. So, well, I hope to get to know some of them better. It’s much more relaxed at parties.”
Yamashita nodded. “It’ll be fun, I guess. It’ll be in Koyama’s and Koki’s room today.”
Ohkura turned his head. “Are you coming, Masuda-kun?”
He shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know. I’m not the party type.”
“Is there someone being a party type?”
Uchi giggled. “I am a party type. Compared to Massu here, everyone is a party type, I think.”
“Don’t call me Massu”, the smaller boy said, but he didn’t seem angry at all; more irritated.
“It sounds cute”, Ohkura noticed and smiled at him.
“Tegoshi-kun made that up, but Masuda doesn’t like it”, Yamashita explained. “Well, Yasuda, Aiba-kun and Tegoshi are always making up strange names for everyone.”
“That’s why everyone is calling you Yamapi?”
He nodded. “Sort of. I’m fine with it, though.”
They all turned their heads, as the door opened again and two of the new students came in. One of them was all bouncy and hyper while the other one seemed calmer and quite adult like. He had black hair and wore glasses, passing them a short look and bow.
The other one with slightly curled brunette hair came over and greeted them casually. “Yo”, he said and took the seat next to Uchi. “What’s up?”
“Not much”, Yamashita answered with a smile. “What makes you that excited, Kusano-kun?”
“I’m not excited.” He seemed a little puzzled. “Do I give that impression? I’m just in a good mood.”
Masuda frowned. “He somehow reminds me of Tegoshi.”
“Slightly”, Uchi added.
“What is that party tonight about? Will there be girls?”
Ohkura frowned. “This is an all boys school.”
“What doesn’t mean that we all have to be around only boys for twenty-four hours a day, does it? Isn’t there an all girls school just down the street, too?” Kusano looked at every one of them. “Why don’t we invite them over?”
“That’s not allowed”, a voice from the other side of the room answered and they all turned to the black-haired boy.
Yamashita nodded. “As Kato-kun says.”
The youngest one sighed. “How extremely boring. But, well. I’m going to have fun anyways.”
Uchi couldn’t help the smile spreading across his face. “I’m sure, you’ll have some.”
More people entered the room now and they all turned as the teacher came in, too.
Ohkura smiled at Kazuya as he reached the seat next to him and sat down.
“Everyone’s talking about that party. It seems to become a big event”, Kazuya said as he put his things to his table.
“I guess I won’t miss the fun”, Ohkura answered.
“You’re just going because of the free food.”
“That influenced my decision, true, indeed.” Ohkura smiled and stretched then. It rang and the teacher started to talk at the front. He leaned closer to Kazuya. “Have you decided on a club yet?”
Since he didn’t have much interest in biology, as well, Kazuya leaned in, too. “I applied for baseball. How about you?”
“I don’t know.” The taller one frowned slightly. “I thought about the cooking club.”
“Suits you.”
Ohkura threw him a look. “Nishikido-kun advised me to join.”
“It’s still that complicated with him?” Kazuya looked sorrowful.
“We don’t talk.”
“Well, I can assure you that it’s probably better than to have to watch magic tricks for at least half an hour every evening.”
Ohkura giggled. “Most likely.”
The room was definitely too small for all the people who had come, so by now most of them were gathered in the corridor or had gone to the rooms next door. Aiba’s and Yamashita’s room was opened as well and Kazuya dared to peek inside to see lots of people sitting in that room; Aiba in the centre of the room, entertaining everyone with stories and jokes.
He turned again to check the next room, as someone took his wrist and hold him back. He turned and smiled at Koyama.
“Are you finding everything, Kame-chan?”
The younger one wasn’t used to being called like that; he actually rather disliked it, but in a way, the way Koyama said it, it sounded more like a nice auntie who utterly cared for Kazuya. So he just smiled. “I’m fine, thanks.”
“Come, I’ll get you a drink.”
Kazuya followed the boy with the reddish hair inside the room. It was even more crowded there, loud music was playing and it was hard to put one foot in front of the other.
Koyama poured him a drink and then pointed at Masuda who was sitting in a chair in the middle of the room; he seemed lost.
Together, they walked over and Masuda jumped a little, as Koyama tapped his shoulder. The older boy pointed with his head into the direction of the door and Masuda gave him a thankful smile.
“I feel uncomfortable at parties”, Masuda said as they were outside the room.
“Ma, ma.” Koyama patted his hair. “There’s no need.”
Kazuya nipped his drink and watched Masuda. He was rather the cute kind than the sexy one with his chubby cheeks and small eyes. They got even smaller when he smiled.
Kazuya liked him. “I don’t feel comfortable, either.”
“Ah, you guys should just enjoy your youth”, Koyama sighed and gave them a sorrowful look. “You should enjoy all this trouble.”
Uchi came out of the door, swaying slightly and laughing badly. He opened the next door and held a hand in front of his mouth to muffle his laughter.
“Well, not too much, probably”, Koyama added with a frown and then followed the younger one to check on him.
Kazuya and Masuda remained where they were, as suddenly Nakamaru and Subaru came over to them.
“In Aiba’s and Yamapi’s room they started to sing Karaoke. Hina’s not really a good singer”, Subaru said in a serious voice.
Kazuya giggled. “What is he singing?”
“Some Ayumi Hamasaki song”, Nakamaru said. “We’ve escaped before it got really ugly.”
“Wah, this is bad!” Tegoshi stumbled out of the room. “Someone should prohibit Murakami-kun to sing; especially L’arc en ciel songs.”
“You see”, Subaru added and gave Masuda and Kazuya a meaningful look. “It’s really bad.”
“Ne, Massu, let’s get something to drink”, Tegoshi said and gripped the older one’s arm.
The boy just rolled his eyes and shrugged his wrist free. “I don’t want a drink.”
“But I want one.”
“Then go and get yourself one!”
“But I want Massu…”
“Really, Tegoshi-kun, I told you already a million times not to call me that!”
Nakamaru made a step forward and took Masuda’s shoulders. “My, my. Calm down.”
“That leaves a nice impression to the new one”, Sho said as he came near, someone behind him. “A fight.”
“When are Tegoshi and Masuda not fighting?” Subaru gave an excusing smile.
“Whenever Tegoshi’s not acting like a brat”, Sho answered.
“Hey!” The younger one pouted. “What does that mean? I never acted like a brat!”
They just all looked at him, his arms folded in front of his chest, his lips pouting.
“Yeah, sure. However”, Sho just said and cleared his throat. “This one is a little late, but he just made it right in time for the party.” He made a step aside to let the person behind him come ahead.
His hair was slightly reddish and his face a bit girlish.
“Nice to meet you”, Kazuya said friendly.
Masuda, Subaru and Tegoshi gave him friendly nods as well, as the boy raised his head and looked at them.
It remained silent for a while as he looked at all of them and then turned his head again.
“I’m Tegoshi Yuya”, the youngest one said and pointed at the others. “That’s Nakamaru-kun and Subaru-kun and this is Kamenashi.” He turned to Masuda, who was standing next to him, still. “And that’s my room mate, Massu.” He ignored the glare he got for that.
The older one raised his head again and looked at Nakamaru who stared at him in disbelieve.
“I’m Ueda Tatsuya. Nice to meet you.”
