Silly, short poems by the great Ogden Nash. These are the kind of poems you can shout out while intoxicated and/or hyper and/or trying to confuse someone. And they are genius.

The Ant

The ant has made himself illustrious
Through constant industry industrious.
So what?
Would you be calm and placid
If you were full of formic acid?

We did a unit on poetry in my sophmore high school English class, and my friend and I found "Reflections on Ice-Breaking" in a book and just thought it was the greatest thing ever :) We still talk about it, even four years later!

haha yeah, that was the first poem I ever heard of Ogden Nash's. Gene Wilder says it in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory lol

The turtle lives 'twixt plated decks
Which practically conceal its sex.
I think it clever of the turtle
In such a fix to be so fertile.

Long ago, I decided that the best way to stop an argument between two people (a yelling, screaming, fighting argument) was to get right up between the two and recite poetry, loudly. (I used the first few lines of Allen Ginsburg's "America" on my bus once. It works wonders. There's nothing that will stop people dead in their about-to-rip-a-throat-out tracks as "Go fuck yourself with your atom bomb.")
I think "The Ant" will be perfect. I must remember it. (And they're hilariously wonderful.)
