Well, that was rather my point. I read (partially because it's Ogden Nash) "Have you seen yourself retreating?" as sardonic -- e.g., pants that look good from the front don't necessarily look good from the back, and, in particular, current styles often do unfortunate things to the shape of the be-hind.
