[Hanekoma's found a smooth flat rock and another, cupped one somewhere; the PCD set up on his windowsill catches his face and part of the stone, scraping rhythmically as he grinds something to powder between the two. He glances sideways at it.]So we've got tombstones out there now, huh. Guess the city's gettin' itself decorated for the holidays... ( Read more... )

Well, if ya wanna help...

[He taps the last charcoal dust from the grinding stone and carefully scoops the powder into a scavenged screw-top jar.] I'm gonna need to wash these off. You get this one -- [he passes over the much smaller grinding stone] and I'll get the bit one, okay?

Eventually, I'm gonna be making paint. [He settles the stone under one arm and follows her.] You need a couple things -- pigment and some kinda base to put the pigment in -- and one of the easiest kinds ta make uses egg yolks for the base. Now that I've got those ducks out back, I've got the eggs, so I need pigment.

If you're willin' ta help me make it, you can use it too.

Got materials for black and white; I'll need the right pigments to manage other colors. Those'll be trickier ta dig up. [He sets his stone on the counter next to her, waiting for her to finish.]

Plant shades usually don't hold color real well. Mineral color's good, or synthetic if you've got it - around here I think rocks are all I'm gonna get.

And sure I'm sure. So long as you help out, you've got a right to it too, kiddo.

Copper ores, mostly. [Reaching to move the rock for her, and splashing water over the grinding surface.]

There're some plant dyes that'll hold their color, but I doubt any of 'em grow here.

Just means I have to be more creative about usin' it, right?

[He gives her a conspiratorial grin and heaves the larger rock back up, the last rivulets of water running off its surface.] Okay, let's get these put back - they'll need ta drip dry for a bit.
