5 nieces and a nephew. Every one of them will get a book this Christmas from me. Maybe more than one. Suggestions are welcome, I only have 3 figured out. (4 of the kids are aged between 2yrs and 6yrs - one is about 8yrs and the other 11yrs.) Please don't suggest the Harry Potter books. They are kids. Therefore, they already have HP.

from the mixed up files of mrs. basil e. frankweiler (even today i fantasize about running away and hiding in a museum after hours.)
mrs. frisby and the rats of NIMH
the phantom toolbooth
the bridge to terabithia (if you haven't read this, i would advise that you read it before you give it as a gift. it probably would work best for a more mature 11yr old.)
the little house on the prairie series (i started reading these at around 8, i think.)
an aunt of mine gave me the first three anne of green gables set when i was about 10. i've still got them, although i almost read them into tatters.
btw, i loved the monster at the end of this book. there was also a book that i read to death called socks for supper (also a preschool age book), but unfortunately that one's out of print. (if you can ever find it? buy it immediately. you'll love it, but on the off chance that you don't, i'll buy it ( ... )

The phantom tollbooth, another classic, probably should wait a year or two,
I missed the little house on the prarie series, and the Anne books, as I went from the Nancy Drew/Trixie Belden/Cherry Ames series straight into Agatha Christie (cause those were available at home.) So thank you for those suggestions. Luckily, I also bought between 5 and 10 books from the scholastic book service every month - and got most of the Newberry Award winners from the 70's that were aimed at the young adult market that way. In a couple of years, my eldest niece will be ready for those!

This is my favorite morning cartoon and let me tell you. I think I am actually going to buy the books for me.

Also, Coraline would be great for the older two. "Monster" is a classic, and Sandra Boynton makes a line of the best, cutest board books ever. Really. Oh, and Jane Yolen's "How do Dinosaurs" series is fabulous as well. Seriously, call me if you want more. Children's books is a subject I can wax on and on about. Between Chicago kids, Beloved Nephew, and my own love of them, I'm something of an officianado. Feel free also to call Curly Lou, since she's also into them.
