Summary: Lucie's thoughts after her conversation with Darnay about Carton.
Author's Note: Second entry in my series on Dickens's Women.

The day after my talk with Charles about Sydney Carton, I felt greatly relieved. It was a strange and unaccountable feeling. Why should it matter to me what my husband thinks of a man who is only an occasional guest in our home-a man of whom we both know so little?

It is hard to explain, even to myself. But ever since that night when Mr. Carton revealed his heart to me-that night of which I have never spoken to anyone-I have been haunted by the pain in his eyes . . . and by the knowledge that I could not help him.

Everyone thinks of him as a mere hapless drunkard, throwing his life away. But I saw another side of him that night-a gentle, almost noble side. It tears at my heart to think of the difference between what people see, and what he really is. And it makes me want to show him to others in the light by which I saw him, even if they may never know how I came to see that light.

There is so very little that I can do for him. But I can do this much.
