Summary: He had seen crucifixes all his life, but never really looked at one before.
With a little of the money from the sale of the bishop’s silver, Jean Valjean bought a small wooden crucifix. In the evenings, after his day’s work was done, he would sit alone in his room and gaze at it.
He had seen crucifixes all his life, from the time he was a child. But it seemed to him that, until God’s mercy had been translated to him by the bishop’s kindness, he had never really looked at any of them. God, in his mind, had always been a remote figure, indifferent to his suffering.
But now Valjean looked directly into the eyes of the God nailed to the cross-eyes that seemed to gaze back at him, helpless and filled with pain. And he knew, as the tears rose in his own eyes, that this was a God he could trust.
