I suddenly seem to be on a bit of a Leiji Matsumoto kick. It came about randomly, after discovering that Lucent had never seen anything with Captain Harlock in it, much less anything Galaxy Express related outside of the beautiful Excel Saga parody ( Read more... )

My art has been compared to Leiji Matsumoto's before, but sadly, the only thing that I've actually read of his is the Galaxy Express 999 manga :x.

I really want to see the anime and Captain Harlock :D

You know, I've never read the GE999 manga. I should read what's out sometime.

Galaxy Express 999 was like the first anime I saw, on the Sci Fi Channel in 1998 or 1999. Epic. You should also get the Leiji Matsumoto-animated Daft Punk DVD, Interstella 5555.

Whoa, I totally didn't realize he did animation for Daft Punk, though, now that I'm remembering the Aerodynamic video, I suppose I should have.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to add that to my list.

Also, GE999 is a great thing to see for your first anime. Epic indeed.

LiveieviL has the first half of Captain Harlock and the first 19 episodes of Galaxy Express 999, along with some Queen Millennia (Another Leiji Matsumoto series), and is still working on all 3.

Boxtorrents has Arcadia Of My Youth (Harlock movie), as well as the 3 Galaxy Express movies, Galaxy Express 999, Adeiu Galaxy Express, and Galaxy Express 999 - Eternal Fantasy

Finally, if you don't mind spending a few bucks, RIght Stuff has the Maetel Legend OVA for $6 before shipping. Definitely worth picking up.

Do yourself a favor and watch them.

(FYI - Arcadia Of My Youth was sort of a reboot for Harlock, starting with his past and then continuing into the new Endless Orbit SSX series. The first Galaxy Express movie is a compressed, but well done, version of the series while the other two movies are sequels. Maetel Legend serves as a sort of prelude to Galaxy Express 999, and deals with the early story of Maetel, Emeraldas, and the planet Andromeda)
