I agree but I am still not sure about Rupert's charachter. Although I am erring on the side of out for what he can get and not to trustworthy. Loved the scene in the loo. Wonder how many takes it took.
I hate having to explain what's going on when it's still going on - so OH staying awake is a very good thing!
Felix is definitely another in the long line of smooth bastards that Rupert plays so well. I think his hair is darker for this - gives him that slickly polished look we'=ve come to associate with businessmen and politicians.
Which is part of the fun of watching an actor in different roles, to see how they do the job of acting rather than being themselves in different clothes.
The production itself wasn't my thing, if Byrnes's halo had gotten any brighter it would have burned a hole in my LCD TV. I did like RG's smarmy politician, I could believe he was Home Secretary well before I could believe Byrnes had gotten to any Cabinet level position.
While I agree about Rupert's character I totally disagree with you about Gabriel Byrne's character. My take on it is that I don't think he has a halo I just think everyone else was telling him truths, half truths or lies and if it wasn't for the journo he would have no idea what's going on. That's why I love it so much.

I'm currently opting for "pretty shady but not as bad as some"!

And Felix is so charming - the sort of politician I wouldn't trust the second he was out of sight. But there again, why would I want him out of sight?

It sounds brilliant and watching it will be the VERY first thing I do when I get home and my jet lag has passed.
