Why did I not know that Anthony Horowitz has been chosen to write a new Sherlock Holmes novel? But but but, guh. He knows how to write detective stories. I believe this will turn out better than that Winnie-the-Pooh 'sequel'. Also, Conan Doyle's estate is pretty nifty and rather cool and (used to, at least) send back IC letters if you sent them ( Read more... )

It looks like you guys are over a subduction zone, though, which also causes earthquakes. As the heavier, colder, and more brittle oceanic plate subducts under the Australia plate, it bends and cracks, causing earthquakes.

But it's good to know you and your friends are safe. ♥

The subdustion zone is by the North Island. The plate boundary runs through the South Island (where the earthquate occurred) but there's no subduction occurring there, only side-to-side motion. That does also cause earthquakes, but Christchurch wasn't considered high risk - the fault that ruptured was one the geologists didn't know about because it was buried under river gravels and hadn't had a quake in something like 16,000 years.
Sorry for the nitpick, but I'm a geology student and like to see people getting this stuff accurate.

I was waiting for you to come and say something about this. And if you didn't, I would've prodded you to explain better.

Oh no no, by all means, let me know if I've got it wrong. I'm a Japanese linguistics major and my geology experience amounts to one class about volcanoes, so I welcome all corrections. XD

Howl's Moving Castle: Always an excellent choice.

Glad to hear you and your family are safe! <3

What a shame about the bookstore! Even chain stores have more personality than websites, and it's not as if one can have community gatherings at Borders.com.

I'm glad that you (even though you don't live in Christchurch in the first place) and everyone you know is safe, and hope that the 100+ missing are found as soon as possible. Has the cause of the quake been determined yet?

It seems like it was on another fault to the last one (last September) but that one probably triggered it, so it was sort of an aftershock. It may have been a splinter fault - I'm not sure. There's all sort if tectonic stuff going on in NZ, so it gets pretty complicated.

I am fairly sure half the sales the Wellington branch have in the manga section are from cosplayers using the space to meet up in.
