Honestly, I'm not surprised at all that it didn't win the Best Picture Oscar. I am, however, surprised that it was even nominated for it. ._. Pretty =/= Best Picture material.
I don't really care about the Oscars at all, but perhaps they were thinking that the artistic merits made up for everything else? But yes, usually best picture nominees have better material.
If your suspension of belief is broken, yeah, I wouldn't recommend seeing it. But it is pretty and if you have people who are intelligent to discuss it with, it does okay in the end. Would probably make great snark material when watched with those intelligent people on DVD with a fast forward button though.
(And I am leaning towards the idea that they knew what they were doing when they left in 'unobtanium'.)
