Hello!

I have been fighting rabid computers all week. I got tired of the 3gb old-office-compaq heapocrap and fired up my Real Computer again. It worked! Then I switched it off to fiddle with something and it conked out completely. Bitch. I may switch it on again just to fan my feet. So I pulled le bichon compaq apart to fit a decent hard drive inside it ( Read more... )

I've planning to buy season 1 of BSG, so you're not quite the last person to start watching it *g*

Yay! We can noob together!

I knew perfectly well I'd like it (Dark! Space! Killer robots! My favourite DS9 writer!), and I though there was no rush and it'd be on real TV soon. The only problem was I forgot what a pitiful weakling I am about spoilers. Although I read them so fast they're all a big jumble and hopefully I'll have got some things wrong.

I completely agree with you on the Who issue - it's not as if the series is beyond repair, but seeing as about ninety per cent of the last run of episodes consisted of cutesy references to bits in the previous year's episodes which people seemed to like, I'm worried they might not have the self-awareness to sort it out.

I feel bad sometimes about being so critical, but I think it just means that I have high expectations. I mean, I've seen every single episode of 'Smallville' and I never say a word about it because it's not worth it. The good episodes are a bonus. With this DW series, I feel it's so close to being good but keeps missing out due to "writing for children" or "emotion over plot" and small changes would make it perfect. 'Doomsday' and TGIF would only need a few tweaks to become truly great stories.

I haven't watched BSG either.

But it's good to hear from you!

Hello!

It's a darn good space opera if you like that sort of thing, but it does make me laugh when they do reviews and interviews swearing it's "not sci-fi but drama that just happens to be set in space". With killer robots.

I'm with you on that one. I also like BSG, but find the "too cool for school" attitude off-putting. When will people realize that good storytelling in science fiction follows the same rules as good storytelling anywhere? The genre has evolved, but the reputation lingers.

I also found the first season to be wildly overrated by fans, with many praising it as the best SF show ever or the best show on television. I liked it, but it wasn't without flaws. As a result, I didn't suffer the crushing disappointment many people did when they felt the second season wasn't up to the standards of the first. Yeah, I could see the problems, but still enjoyed watching.

For whatever reason, perhaps because I've been a fan for so long, I can't retain this detached attitude towards Doctor Who. When it disappoints, it really disappoints. Maybe, as you point out, because it has the potential to be great.

I don't see why sf gets a worse repuation for cheese than any other genre. There are hundreds of rubbish police dramas and soaps out there ( ... )
