“What would you know, Ron?” Hermione huffed as they made their way down the corridor towards the kitchen at Grimmauld Place.
Ron opened his mouth to answer then paused, shrugged, and barged past both Hermione and Harry and entered the kitchen. His hands shoved into his trouser pockets, hunched over as if the weight of the world were on his back.
“Did you have to say that, Hermione?” Harry said, his tone defeated. “He's going to be miffed for ages now.”
“Harry, he doesn't know what he's talking about. I can't just let him think he does,” she replied determinedly.

Dinner was awkward. Ron was as stubborn as ever and Harry looked like he'd rather be anywhere else than between them, Hermione noted wryly.
Obviously picking up on the tension, Remus spoke from his seat at the end of the table, “Is everything... okay?”
Harry looked up and was about to answer when the kitchen door banged open, a mass of black material entering briskly and sitting at the far end of the table from the rest of the diners.
Harry's mouth closed and his lips set into a firm line as he went back to picking at his food.

“Severus,” Remus said, grasping onto the latest person to join the group like a lifeline back into conversation. “I didn't know you were coming today. Still, there's plenty of food.”
It wasn't a very good choice of lifeline.
“Lupin,” came the reply before the man stood again, looked intensely at the three sat in the middle of the table, turned on his heel and left.
“Well, must've... forgotten about a potion or something,” Remus said half-heartedly.
“Or something is about right,” replied Ron bitterly.
“Oh, Ron, get a grip,” Hermione said slamming her cutlery onto the tabletop and standing.
~*~*~
She could hear Harry's unsuccessful attempts to calm Ron as she left the kitchen and headed upstairs towards Severus' room.
Ron didn't understand. Neither did Harry - although he'd not said anything out loud. They wouldn't believe that she was just 'friends' with Severus Snape.
They're right not to, she thought to herself as she knocked on the dark door and waited patiently for him to open it.
While lying wasn't something she wanted to do it was necessary, at least for now. Telling her best friends about her relationship with their hated Potions Master was something that had to wait.

The door opened and he stood back to allow her entry.
“You told them,” he said bluntly.
“Yes. I told them what we agreed,” she replied, walking over to the bed and sitting on the edge.
He remained near the door, his arms folded and one finger running across his lips.
“You don't believe me,” she continued. “So you left...”
He nodded, turning away from her to look out of the window on the other side of the room.
“I... they didn't believe me,” she said, moving over to the window ledge before looking back at him. “I did try.”
~*~*~
He walked to stand next to her and she had to restrain herself from touching him, he was so close.
“So you gave in, told the truth,” he said, his eyes on the road outside.
Hermione leant back against the window and closed her eyes. “No. I kept to what we agreed. They just refused to believe that you'd want me as a friend. Of course I don't know if I ought be insulted if that's the case.”
“Pardon?”
“Well what they said basically translates to 'I'm good enough to fuck but not to be a friend',” she replied tiredly.
~*~*~
“What?”
“Ridiculous, isn't it?” Hermione smiled wryly, her eyes still closed. “All that time and care we took to never be anything more than just polite friends in public, to keep anything else behind closed doors was a waste. Well, for those two anyway.”
She heard him snort softly and then the room fell into silence for a few moments.
Hermione didn't speak, she didn't know what to say.
“...I do, you know,” he said quietly, making her open her eyes and turn to look at him.
“I do see you as a friend, Hermione, but as a lover, too.”
~*~*~
His forehead was on the window pane, one hand on the glass next to it. His eyes were closed. Hermione didn't think she'd seen him this unguarded in her life and couldn't help but put a hand over his on the glass.
He lifted his head as she she did so and turned to look at her, his eyes searching.
“I do, too, Severus,” she said, kissing his cheek before pulling back and making him turn to face her.
“Its hard, this secret.” She gestured between them. “But it's worth it and I wouldn't endanger it for the world, Severus.”

To be continued... again.
