They seem to be buying his cooperation. Maybe his role as Headmaster hasn't been well accepted after the war.

It's probably from spending so much time with my mom, who is retired and just moved from the family home of 41 years.

No indeed, I don't think his efforts were well received at the school. I think bribery can work for both participants, and Hermione will see that Severus makes the most of it.
