Kapiti College Ponderings for 2013

So, another year down for Kapiti College meetings. This year has been a good one with the most consistent fun all year than any previous year, though no game quite reached the height of Exalted 2e a few years back.

This year consisted of:

"accessible gimmicks of Greek Mythic Fantasy and In Sppaaacccceee"

Heh.

I think that Greek Mythic Fantasy isn't accessible and In Spaaace rarely helps anything get more accessible. But maybe I know too much about it.

Have you thought about something in the Savage Worlds vein? Super-simple mechanics and a bunch of cool/interesting settings available.

Many college students gamers are also Classics fans, so they get what the game is about pretty quickly. The addition of Space sends a pretty clear message that you don't need to worry too much about exacting authenticity, which lets the players jump in :)

As for simple systems, Dragon Age, Esteren and World of Darkness (mortals) all fall with that camp last year, so yeah. I also used True 20 in the past, which is very similar to Savage Worlds. As for 2013, Barbarians of Lemuria, Kuro and World of Darkness (mortals) are all simple and The One Ring, Hellas, and Dungeon World are not that much heavier.

So mechanical simplicity is definitely a factor in my thinking, though by no means the defining one given that success doesn't seem to be directly related to it. TBH I haven't put much stock into keeping to a single system though as the groups change so frequently.

Another possibility is Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2, though I have never settled on the which module to run - Riddling Reaver, Crown of Kings or the Dungeoneer campaign.
