A couple of things have made me realise how out of touch I am with modern life. I have got used to not understanding lj postings when they are full of comouter jargon, but last week at London Bridge the Oyster card readers were not working. What is an Oyster card ? How many shellfish travel on the tube or rail lines.

An excellent system whereby instead of feeding your card in through the turnstiles on the underground (thus getting it lost in the machinery or stolen by the person in front of or behind you) you touch it to a reader which opens the gate. They're also handy for buses in central London, most of which are now 'pay before boarding' only the pay machines don't work properly half the time so an Oyster card saves you doing battle with them.
