My cats have been eating grain-free, carbohydrate-free homecooked food for the last four years how, and they're doing great on it. Or at least they're doing great for sixteen-year-old cats. *grin

I don't know what cats like... but my dog LOVES raw, green tripe. You can use canned tripe, too. It's lean, but has good tummy stuff in it. It's very enticing (read---it smells like the bad end of a cow).
Fish oil seems to be fairly safe. My 20 lb dog needs a lot of anti-inflamatory stuff, and takes a tablespoon at a time.
For Emma, carbs seem to bulk her up. I know cats are different, though, and don't use the carbs as well as dogs. Blackstrap molasses has a lot of vitamins and minerals in it, and I occasionally use it to make sweet treats, for Emma. She likes the flavor.
I may try the Nutrical, then, but keep an eye on his blood sugar. He's not diabetic (but, it turns out, he is hyperthyroid and now has meds for that) but had one borderline blood test before going on the carb-free diet. Carbs definitely bulked him up before he went carb-free, so maybe there's a use for them now.
Thanks for the info on the fish oil. If a 20 pound dog gets a tablespoon, I won't worry about a 9 pound cat getting four or five capsules full.
Ah, hyperthyroid. Well, hopefully, medication will clear up his problem. Poor kitty!
Yeah, a tablespoon is a bit extreme, but I generally feed fairly lean meat (she eats a lot of rabbit, lean beef, and turkey), and she has the biggest issues... I worked up very slowly, and it doesn't seem to bother her. Bloodwork is awesome. Stomach better than it's ever been. Stools stay fine, so I keep it up, LOL.
