Oh, wow. This was amazingly good. all the details, all the world building - and your OC was so wonderfully drawn out! I'm not usually a fan of OCs, but I take it all back. Especially if they are as good as Brett was here.

Your writing was very visual and I could see so much of it happening.

I also really liked the way that Simon's past history with a man was accepted with so little fuss. And the backstory you gave them both was actually quite heartbreaking.

I'm not usually a big fan of OCs either. It was kind of necessary to the prompt to have one though, so I gave it my best shot. One of the most important facets of his character, in my opinion was that he wasn't a super genius. I don't think everyone in the core is like Simon and River, so I wanted to show someone who could pull off being in the core and could be a doctor of Simon's caliber through hard work and determination. That's what I love about Brett. I also enjoy that he's flawed and he makes mistakes but he's giving it his best shot

I'm glad you liked the crew and river. I was really worried that I wouldn't get the characterizations right. My beta reader had a lot to do with the language mannerisms and pointing out any out of character moments too. So this is a bit of a shout out to her too.

At first I thought Brett was there because he somehow caused the plague.

Actually, initially there was going to be a subplot involving someone starting the plague but it ended up getting dropped because I'm just a poor history student and have no background in germ theory.

It was never going to be Brett, but I can understand why you would think that especially given Simon's suspicions at the beginning.

Great back story for Simon. And the story on the moon, with the history of the plague and the black-market drugs. So even though it's mostly from Simon's point of view, we can still see Brett's story. The diary entry was a great introduction for him. And I like that both he and Simon come to terms with their past.

I'm glad you liked the diary entry. I threw that in because Brett was coming off as too harsh in earlier versions and I wanted to show the more human side of him.

Pretty much until the very end, I wasn't sure how Brett and Simon were going to end up. I'm glad they parted on good terms though.

I really like this - you've built fantastic back-story for Simon, and Brett is a fascinating foil for Simon, a really good way to allow us to see how he's changed since he joined the crew of Serenity.
