I'm just lost as to how to get it on my journal. Is it mandatory for me to get a paid account to use this? I feel stupid right now. I've never done this before.

And no you don't need a paid account to use this layout. All you'll need is an image hosting site to host the images (see the link at the end of the page I provided). Let me know if you have any problems once you follow the stuff on those pages.
