katestamps and
totally4ryo for the betas! So I'm reading this article about The Lightning Thief movie that's coming in February, and it looks interesting and I've heard good things about the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. A friend of mine and her kid rec the book series (they're just as big on Classical and Mythological things as I am), and I picked them up to read during my trip to visit kinfolk for Thanksgiving. It's just as good as the recs promised, but it didn't give me Percy Jackson/Torchwood crossover bunnies. It gave me Torchwood/Mythological Detective Loki Ragnarok plotbunnies. With Percy Jackson references. WTH, mate. Follows

Imitating Art "Japan!" Jack cried out enthusiastically, flinging his arms out wide as he ducked through the airplane hatch. "Ah, Ameratsu, how I adore thee," he added, turning his face and hands upwards towards the brilliant noontime sun.
"While your sudden bout of devotion is certainly uplifting, sir," came a sarcastic, tired voice from behind him, "We'd like to disembark as well. I've been in a plane for too long for my liking today."
The Captain looked over his shoulder and grinned a little guiltily. Ianto and Toshiko, both looking pale and exhausted, stood in the queue behind him, the flight crew anxiously milling about behind him. "Sorry," he said, hurrying down the flight of stairs onto the tarmac. The scent of engine exhaust, burnt rubber, and hot asphalt hit his nose and he took a deep breath, savoring the fragrance. "I love airports."
"And airplanes, and spaceports, and airline stewardesses," Toshiko said, shouldering the bag containing only a fraction of her equipment. She was one of the reasons why they were on the tarmac instead of at a terminal. Torchwood tech would definitely be flagged at Customs. "We know, Captain."
Jack let out a grin, unphased by the attitude he was getting from both of them. The UNIT conference in Japan had required his attendance, and while Toshiko was still a little nervous to be in a room with so many soldiers, she made both a great translator and a fantastic presenter.
(He was also planning to let her slip her leash and visit her family for a little bit. It was the least he could do for everything she'd done for him)
Ianto, Owen and Gwen had pulled straws to see whom was going to take the third invitation.
Gwen and Owen were stuck in Cardiff with promises of lots of presents, hopefully just being bored for a week with a quiet Rift.
"You two are snarky when you're traveling."
"We're tired and crabby," Ianto corrected. "Even if it was a private jet -- with a bedroom."
"And the pull-out bed for me," Toshiko cut in.
" -- And Tosh's pull-out, traveling is still taxing."
"And it's not like you let him sleep anyway, Jack," Tosh added, giving Ianto a sly, knowing sideways look.
Ianto, to his credit, didn't blush. Much. "Anyway. Jet lag, also, is a killer."
"Ah yes, I agree. I could sleep for ages," Jack leered at Ianto.
"Whoa there, big boy, let's get our arrangements for the rest of our trip sorted out first." Tosh patted Jack on the back, turning to watch the flight crew unload the rest of her equipment.
"Already done," Jack called after her with a grin.
"I shudder to think exactly what arrangements you've made for us," Ianto admitted. "I was forbidden from doing any planning."
"I've got connections here in Tokyo," the immortal reassured his younger lover. "Besides, someone here's been anxious to see how you've been getting along."
He tilted his head to one side, motioning over his shoulder with a not-so-subtle roll of his blue eyes. Ianto gazed over his shoulder and started when he saw two people on the other side of the fence, waiting for them. One was a small child with short ginger hair jumping up and down waving like a maniac at them, the black lab puppy in his arms dangerously at risk of slipping from his master's grasp. A tall young man in a dark green-colored suit was standing next to the bouncing child, and seemed to be trying to calm the boy down. A pink puff with a tail was sitting on the taller man's shoulder, and Ianto swore he could hear the quiet "nya" sound it was making all the way across the noise of the airport.
"We're staying with Loki and his sons," Ianto realized. "The Norse god of mischief and his brood will be our hosts."
"It'll be exciting," Jack enthused. "C'mon, let's get our stuff and go meet them."
"It's worse than I imagined," the young Welshman muttered under his breath, adjusting his grip on his carry-on.

"I'm sorry, I'm putting you out," Yamino apologized yet again at Ianto's elbow. "You're exhausted from your journey and a guest in our home and here I have you helping me make the coffee."
Ianto chuckled and shook his head. "It's all right," he reassured the young godling. "I don't mind much."
"I do," the bespectacled man admitted. "It's terribly disrespectful."
"Well, your father isn't the patron god of travelers, so I guess you can be forgiven."
The insult slipped out before Ianto could catch it, and he stiffened when he realized what he'd said. Tales of mythological mortals disrespecting the gods and goddesses in the slightest of ways and getting more than their due flew through his head.
Luckily for him, Yamino laughed. "I guess I am more like him than I realize," he admitted. "His sons and daughters do have a penchant for causing trouble."
The look that crossed his face was so forlorn that Ianto had to stop from instinctively giving him a hug. It was identical to the looks that his own niece and nephew got when their little hearts were broken when they discovered that Rhi and Johnny were having another row, or when Ianto had to leave a party or visit early because there was yet another end-of-the-universe catastrophe brewing in Cardiff. He thought back to the stories he'd been researching ever since meeting Loki and his sons in Cardiff.
He'd sussed out who Yamino really was the first time he'd met him; Jormungandr, the world snake, middle child and youngest son of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. He'd grown so strong that he'd scared the other gods and been cast into the ocean of the mortal realm. Cut off from his divine kin and any potential mortal contact, he'd grown up in the cold and sandy mud of the oceans' floor, growing and growing until he could encircle the world.
It was little wonder that he'd sided with his vengeful father in the Ragnarok myth cycle. That sort of anger would set anyone at odds with the gods. Luckily for them, the real thing seemed to be more intent of keeping his father safe and happy -- and buying things through mail order -- than taking over the world.
"Um, Gwen and Owen send their regards," Ianto said, awkwardly changing the subject. "They're both sorry they missed the trip."
While Ianto had been the only one to fully understand who they were, Tosh, Owen, and Gwen had met Loki, Yamino, and little Fenrir. No one had been able to see Ecchan but him and Jack, and by the end of the visit, Ianto swore he could understand what the dog god wanted, but other than that, Loki had simply been a very charming, friendly alien that was checking in with Jack while he was in town.
"I was sorry to hear that they would not be joining you," Yamino admitted, "but I must confess that it's nice to not have to pretend around you and Jack."
Ianto chuckled a little, setting out five cups and a tiny saucer. "Trust me, I understand." He and Yamino quietly went about preparing coffee and a tray of sweets for a few moments before the Welshman broke their comfortable silence. "Since Tosh is asleep and you and Loki aren't pretending anymore... Am I correct in guessing that Narugodmi is more than just a slip of the tongue?"
A fond smile crossed Yamino's face and he shook his head. "Narugami is one of our kind, yes."
"A Chosen?"
"A god himself."
"Which one?"
"Guess."
Ianto thought for a moment, worrying his lower lip with his teeth. The young man had shown up with an ordered dinner and been rather taken with Toshiko, practically mooning over her as they ate and looking forlornly after her when she turned in early to bed. Ate, of course, being a very loose term for what Narugami had done; He hadn't so much eaten as sucked up an enormous amount of the food without tasting it. He had a temper that bordered on bipolar; manic screaming at Loki one moment and sweet as honey to the others the next. Loki simply seemed amused by the man, while Yamino was obviously cowed around him. And he hadn't let that wooden sword out of arm's reach...
"... Thor?" he guessed. It would explain Yamino's unease around Narugami. Jormungandr and Thor were supposed to be mortal enemies.
Yamino nodded, splashing a little bit of the coffee onto the saucer for his older brother. It was a simple, sweet gesture that made Ianto smile a little bit. Together, the two of them carried the refreshments into the next room. Once cups and saucers were handed out and the plate of biscuits and teacakes was passed, Ianto settled down next to Jack. The Captain smiled and put a hand on Ianto's knee, fond and comforting while he continued to discuss some matter or another with the two Norse gods.
"Loki, sir, I actually have a question I've been meaning to ask," Ianto said as the conversation wound down.
Amused, mischievous green eyes sparkled over the rim of the delicate china teacup. "You were wondering about the other gods and goddesses of old?"
Ianto nodded, and Jack chuckled fondly. Loki leaned forward and set the cup aside, frowning a little when Narugami knocked it a little reaching for the plate of snacks. "The short answer is, yes, for the most part."
"So the Egyptians really did have aliens help them with the pyramids then?"
"Don't sound so surprised, Human," Nargami said around a mouthful of cake. "It's one of the few things you still remember of the Old Ways."
"Lay off," Loki scolded, but his smile was fond. "I don't taunt your Chosen."
"No, you're not nearly as discriminating," Thor said, his words dripping sarcasm.
"Thank you." He turned his attention back to Ianto and Jack. "Yes. Most of them choose to stay out of sight and out of mind in another plane of existence, but some of us take Human forms and blend in among your kind. The Hindu gods and Egyptian gods aren't that fond of it, to be honest."
"It takes more energy to keep up a... pretense, if you will," Yamino put in, quiet and polite as always. "If it wasn't for Father's energy, I wouldn't be able to care for him as I do now."
The young god waved his hand as if to say that it was nothing. "Now the Greek deities? Those are the ones that you really have to watch out for."
"Do they still run amok among the Humans like they used to in the myths?"
"Not so much rape and kidnap and random acts of human-animal transmorph for the slightest of slights, but yes."
"They keep creating demigods, too. Half-human, half-divine," Jack put in. "They're all in the US, for some reason. Big camp of them in New York."
Ianto blinked at him. "You're kidding."
"Please." Jack feigned a wounded look. "I wish they weren't American. UNIT keeps snapping them up when they turn legal age. Now, if they were British..."
"Captain," Loki admonished, the sting removed by the fond look and natural half-smile. "The Greek gods move with the heart of the Western empire. You had your chance."
"So are you... Related to them?" Ianto looked from Loki and Yamino to Thor and Fenrir, the puppy eagerly pushing the saucer around with his nose to get every last drop. "I mean, some of the myths translate so easily from one pantheon to the other."
"Some of those stories are true," Loki agreed. "But a fair few of them aren't. They were created by Humans to teach their descendants desired virtues. But we're more like... Second cousins. Close enough to have a connection, but distant enough to not care about each other's day-to-day goings on."
Ianto thought for a moment before nodding. "Probably not a good idea to taunt them, then."
"No," Loki agreed. "You're under my protection, but that can only go so far."
Next to him, Nargami choked on a partially-chewed biscuit. Yamino jumped up and thumped him enthusiastically on the back, Fenrir pausing to yap up at the two of them in annoyance.
"Of course some gods you need not fear to begin with," Loki said with yet another long-suffering sigh.
Ianto and Jack both started laughing. Thor, ever hot-tempered, started threatening the two as soon as he got his breath back. Yamino moved between the three to try and placate the three, Ianto's laughs increasing in volume as Jack continued to provoke the god.
Fenrir climbed up into Loki's lap and nosed the underside of his father's chin. "Daddy?"
"What's that?" the young boy asked, scratching between his pup's ears.
"We could keep him," the wolf-god pointed out. "Spirit him away. Our sister could make it so he would never die, if you asked her."
"What would you have me do, son? Track down every single thing in the entire universe and ask it not to hurt him?" he questioned. "Ask one of you to play favorites and cause the others to go up in arms when they find out?" Two floppy black ears and the little tail drooped at the idea of the other deities even angrier at the god of mischief -- and by extension, his children -- than they were now. "Now, don't be like that," Loki scolded, rubbing the puppy ears again. "It was a kind thought. But anyway, he's not ours to keep."
The two looked over at Ianto, who was blushing furious and half-heartedly trying to fend of an affectionate kiss from Jack.
"Besides," Loki said with a sigh, "they were upset enough when Jack became an immortal, and I didn't even have anything to do with that one. That was all your sister's doing."
