Jack reached out and touched Gwen, starting at her elbow and trailing his fingers down her skin. There was a band of cool when his fingers moved over the metal on her watch before moving back to take her hands into his.

His thumb brushed over another cool piece of metal, a ring. He twisted it experimentally, feeling the square-cut stone in the middle. He lifted their joined hands, looking down at the ring. A diamond solitaire, with a nice chunk of a stone. Any girl's dream, really.

"What's this?" he demanded, looking from the ring to Gwen's face and back again.

"That's um... that's an engagement ring, that is," she replied sarcastically. Her eyes widened in sarcasm, mouth making a perfect 'o', the image of surprise. She looked up at him, eyes still wide in mock astonishment.

"You're getting married?"

"Yes," Gwen replied, nodding and pulling their hands apart.

He took a step back and crossed his arms across his chest, dumbstruck. It wasn't often that he was at a loss for words. "Wow. Gwen Cooper, getting married. Rhys asked?"

"No," Gwen admitted, looking away and tucking a piece of hair behind her ear in a nervous tell. "We... well, while you were away we had to start pulling longer hours. He left me." She shrugged. "All for the best."

"So..." Jack drawled, shifting his weight on his feet, "who gave you that? There's no way Owen -- "

Gwen snorted in amusement.

"Do I know the lucky man?" Jack asked. "Is he good-looking?"

"Jack -- " Gwen started as they heard footsteps coming around the corridor.

She broke off when Ianto rounded the corner, habitually fixing his already perfect tie. Jack smiled at him, but was treated with a calm, professional nod in return.

"Captain, Gwen. Captain Hart is in the conference room," he informed them both.

"Thank you, Ianto," Jack replied, reaching out to touch Ianto's shoulder. The younger man shifted subtly, avoiding his hand.

"We'll be right in, cariad," Gwen told him. She leaned over and raised herself up on tiptoe to press a soft kiss to Ianto's cheek.

Jack watched, flabbergasted, as Ianto retreated and rejoined the others in the conference room. "You were gone eighteen months, Jack," Gwen said apologetically. She gave him a tight-lipped smile before hurrying off after her fiancee, leaving Jack rooted to the spot and tongue-tied.

"Congratulations," he finally manged, talking into thin air.
