"So," Sally murmured, and Percy knew that voice, it was her Plotting Mother voice. "Who was that?"
"Who was who?" he tried to look innocent, like I totally didn't just have a boy in my room you've never met, but he was never good at those and his mother could see right through him. ".....His name's Nico. He's another..." but his voice faltered on the words, because that started him thinking about Hades and Bianca and how they'd met and what he'd done and how it had all -
"Half-blood?"
He snapped back to reality, and nodded.
"Yeah. Um, his dad's, well." Belatedly he realized he didn't actually want to talk about it at all. "But he's really nice."
And the suggestion that he'd made. That was just. Percy couldn't even contemplate thinking about that, not for at least a month. Give it time, Nico had said. I'll be back.
"Well. The next time he comes over, invite him in, yes?" Sally took the plate from Percy's unresisting hands, then leaned in and kissed him on the forehead. "I'd like to meet more of your friends."
Friends? Yes, he supposed Nico was, now. And he would be back, and Percy wouldn't be ready. But it would be nice to have a friend.
"Yeah, mom," he said, and finally smiled. "I'll be sure to."
