He hasn't thought about Ewan in a while, which is a new thing, apparently. It was just - there was something about working with him, something that was so free and easy and simply joyful, and for the longest time he'd wanted to capture that and hold onto it as tightly as possible, so it didn't run away from him.

There's probably some moral in all of this. Like maybe, the more you keep something, the farther away it gets. He doesn't know.

But the night Jenny breaks up with him - which is the night before he tells Twitter, aka The World, and the night after he realizes that some things are just too broken to fix - he thinks about Ewan. Because he needs a friend, and he has lots of friends, but most of his friends know Jenny a little too well and wouldn't understand why Jim was equal parts broken up and completely okay.

So, without any more thought behind it, he calls Ewan. Perfectly natural thing to do, right?

"H'llo?"

Except, of course, that Ewan could hypothetically be anywhere in the world at any given time, and Jim has the worst timing known to man. (On the telephone, that is. He has incredible timing when he tries.)

"Are you in Mongolia?" It's the first thing that comes to mind.

"No."

"China?"

"Mm-mn." Ewan's fuzzy sleephead voice is growing more and more amused.

"Berlin?"

"No."

"Zimbabwe?"

He laughs, then, and Jim has never been so glad to hear someone laugh in his life. "No. What makes you think I'm somewhere special?"

"I woke you up."

"I was napping."

A sudden smiles springs to his face. "So you're home."

"Home sweet home." Jim can hear the squeak of springs in the background, a familiar sound of the fidgetty listener. "You, Duck?"

"Can I come over?"

It's as sudden as the call itself, and almost surprises the asker. Jim really hadn't - he didn't need to - but it would be nice, and he remembers when the were filming, and after, when he used to show up on Ewan's doorstep and whirl him around like a gentleman, because they both kept pushing the line. Between fiction and reality.

But there was no fiction, now. Just them.

"You're always welcome, you know."

He's out the door with his keys and his sunglasses before he even has a chance to hang up the phone.
