Let's also consider the possibility that the Kenyans were the ones doing the ministry. Christ wanted us to be poor in wealth and rich in spirit. Whenever I hear about these places I think that we should be learning from them, not the other way around. Yes, we need to get them clean water and education, but perhaps ministry is a two way street. Give and get. We give opportunity, they give perspective.

That is so true. In fact the worst part of the trip was at one school where the Principal gathered all the students into an assembly on our last day there and told them: "When you grow up, I want you to be just like these Canadians." My heart was screaming, "Noooo!" There is something incredibly unique and profound about the Kenyan culture, and they taught us all a lot while we were there. None of us wanted to conform them to Western thinking, routines, etc.
Ministry usually is a two way street for sure. As my dad's favorite motto is, "We are best discipled as we minister out."
