Hmmm. If I might offer a suggestion, have you tried doing a greyscale shading/highlight layer first, then applying color to it on a separate layer?
Of course, then there's adjusting the color balance/adding a gradient over the greyscale to kinda give it a little "oomph", because if it's just flat grey/black shading, then the picture looks dull and lifeless, imho.
I think sinvraal could better describe/show it than I could, since I believe she used that method for a drawing she did of Legion a while back that turned out quite lovely.
Yeah, there's just that annoyance of starting from scratch again. It's just weird how my brain flushes out any sort of colouring technique I pick up and replaces it with more black and white art things.
