That last class of the day just happened to be the one that Maible sat in. She took her time gathering her things as the rest of her yearmates filed out of the classroom, waiting until they were gone before finally pushing her bag over her shoulder and approaching the front ( ... )

Ashleigh seemed to think that she was doing a fairly decent job of hiding her feelings. Sure, she was a little mopey but that could be passed off as being unrested. She was pregnant now... for all the world knew, some sort of lethargy had already set in.

Even with all of that, though, it was obvious that she was lost in her thoughts. So lost, in fact, that she'd hardly noticed Maible's presence until she spoke.

"Oh, hey," she responded as the fake smile returned to her face.

Even though she had no clue what her sister wanted, she began to explain her recent boring lessons. "I know that the lessons have been less than exciting," she told the younger girl. "Some lessons have to be boring... they'll pick up again soon."

Seemed logical. After all, Maible and Ash had teased one another about Charms lessons before.

Maible just stared at her sister for a moment as she went on and on about boring classes.

"You're not seriously just prattling on about lessons to me like everything is normal." She shook her head and gave a short laugh.

"Ash, I'm not just some student. I'm your sister. You don't have to pretend with me."

Maybe Ashleigh felt like she did, but to Maible that was silly. They both knew she wasn't buying it. Maible knew her sister a little too well to not know things weren't okay.

Ashleigh sat there and stared at the younger blonde girl. She didn't know what to make of her sister's words.

Didn't she understand that it was easier to pretend? If she pretended to be okay, it was easier to be okay.

Regardless of how she felt, she couldn't just spend her time having some sort of break down because it seemed like the thing to do, or because she wanted to. If she did, she might never be able to get it together again and Ed needed her together - he needed her to be strong for the moments that he couldn't.

"I'm fine," she finally told Maible. "It's hard but I'm working through it... I'm fine."

Maybe the second assurance of her being 'fine' was too much but she needed Maible to believe... or, in the very least, pretend that she did.

If Maible wanted to do something for her, she could talk about the weather, studying for NEWTs, boys - bloody hell, the girl could even prattle on about Potions or Transfiguration. A distraction was help. Making her admit to things that she couldn't feel... well, that was just torture.
