Why did Gen1 use spaceships?

okay this may open aup a can of worms but behalf of all the old fans here is the explanation as to why spaceships were used and not like armada or the new live action movie

they did use space ships in the movie, you just do not see them. they mention the ark and nemesis in the prequel novel ghosts of yesterday, also you can see them in the sequel comic reign of starscream. I guess some TFs do not need the ships though, look at Megatron, he just went after the allspark on his own, while the others gathered in ships.
