So, if I am reading all of this right, it is to punish LJ for nixing basic accounts without letting the community know about it first, and they apologized for doing it that way after people raised a stink?

I am still confused. The decision and reasons given make sense to me. I would rather see basic accounts go away so the company stays profitable vs. LJ go away eventually because it is not profitable.

Other than the basic accounts, all I have seen on the other stuff is vague rumors at best, nothing concrete like the strikethrough last year. Best I can tell, people are tacking that on so they can shout homophobe and racist at anybody that disagrees with a content strike.

If there is proof that LJ has been discriminatory, I would love to see it, but best I can tell, people are just pissed because LJ wants to turn a profit.

I think they're (LJ) up to some shady shit, I'm just not currently involved enough in LJ to care. I've been considering ditching this forum anyhow, for personal reasons, so I'm not in the frame of mind to protest or get involved when I may be on my way out anyhow.

I did find both of these to be interesting reads though:

Those are interesting. I do have issues with the interest censoring, but it has been corrected as of the 17th, and that is fine by me. As for targeted marketing, well, it is no worse than gmail scanning the body of your e-mails to put up targeted ads. I don't like it, but it is the way the net in general is going. I also understand the need for any provider of a service to turn a profit. As I said earlier here, I would rather see LJ be profitable than have no LJ at all.

As for the content strike, the focus seems to be the dropping of basic accounts. If the censorship were still an issue, I would partake, but well, it isn't anymore, so I will not be changing my LJ behavior

Yeah, the thing that offends me is this new method of seemingly trying to sneak changes in, then apologize and make amends later. Under previous ownership, communication was much better and we were told upfront exactly what changes were on the horizon, given a chance to raise concerns. In the one instance I can remember when that wasn't the case, profuse apologies were given. The way they're handling things now just feels sneaky and makes me suspicious.

It's just a blogging site though. If you don't like the way the new owners choose to run things, you close your account and go somewhere else, there are tons of options to choose from. If it's wise to choose your battles (and I believe it is), this hardly seems like one worth getting panties in a bunch over. Life can exist without LJ.

I do find it kind of amusing that a lot of the people that seem really upset over this are the free account holders. Pay for what you use, or be subjected to the whims of those hosting you. It's pretty simple. *shrug*

dropping of basic accounts? umm.. hmm, what kind? I've never paid for an account on here, so is mine going to go away? I'm sorry, I'm not on much so this is kind of confusing me...
