My first reaction was "Who the hell is that??" And the little montage of his previous roles didn't enlighten me much ( Read more... )

Since I don't watch Dr Who I'm not much fussed one way or another, but I do wish that casting directors would remember that grown-ups watch TV too (yes, even fantasy TV) and might like to watch other grown-ups rather than endless teenagers.

Says the woman who's hooked on Merlin.

Hee - yep, the pretty boys are abundant, aren't they.

Not that I think this new guy's got anything going for him looks-wise - but then neither did Eccleston, to my eyes. Nor most of the other Doctors *shrugs*

What's baffling me is that the Torchwood fic comms are already starting posting stuff with Eleven in the pairing.... that's just wrong, at this stage.

Oh, and I like Merlin too :-)

Apparently he's been in The History Boys, and some other stuff that got good theatrical reviews, so he's probably a decent actor. Let's see how long that lasts.

Oh, fans always do that. I remember when a show called Queen of Swords came out that starred two of the actors who'd had recurring roles in Highlander, the Highlander fans started writing fic as soon as casting was announced - before they even knew what the show was about.

Everyone should watch Merlin. It is shiny, pretty fun, and I speak as one who takes my Arthurian legend very seriously indeed. But you can't be offended by Merlin (okay, you can, a lot of people are), it's just too crackalicious.

I know I've seen him in the Phillip Pulman stuff too, as I saw a little of Ruby In The Smoke one time. Not seen The History Boys yet.

I have no doubt he could be a good actor. I was watching the extras on my copy of a Peter Davison story, and it was shown just how the directors insisted on the cast hamming up their performances; he did this one take where he acted his lines quite well, then he had to do a second take where he's all "Oh noes! We're caught in a time trap! !!!11!!!" *rolls eyes* I think a great deal of the problems with old Who was the direction, and some very lazy editing.

Hee - I can quite easily overlook crack if the show's enjoyable. There are very few shows that I throw a wobbly over - Smallville being a prime example. It was too far past the comic universe I grew up reading for me to stomach it - and I loved Lois & Clark! And the old Batman TV series.
