Post for headofapin: It's lonely out in space / on such a timeless flight

What was supposed to be an easy favor and a fun little jaunt had ended on a pretty low note. To put it mildly.

Seto Kaiba was supposed to be dead. His girlfriend was distraught. Mokuba Kaiba had gone missing, kidnapped at the hands of the man currently trying to complete a hostile takeover of Kaiba's company.

Probably the caring, conscientious thing to do would have been to stay in Japan. Probably a true friend wouldn't have wanted to leave until they knew everyone involved was safe; wouldn't rest until everything was taken care of or at least something was done.

But that wasn't the way Justine's thought process worked. It never had been. It wasn't that she wasn't worried - but it translated into, all she could think about was how miserable and irritable dealing with this made her, and how she wanted to get home. Back into her domain, where she felt confident and relaxed and everything was under her control.

She slept fitfully on the flight back. Beth wasn't in a good mood, to say the least, and occasional glances told her that she might have been crying - which meant that Justine really didn't want to talk. Comforting people took a patience she was rarely in possession of, especially not now.

Every once in awhile, she glanced down at her phone in her hand, frowning.

One of the things she'd been looking forward to the most about getting back was seeing Gabriella again. But that had gone pretty south with just one phonecall. They'd had an...argument, she guessed. Actually she wasn't really sure what had happened. All she knew was, her girlfriend had said something that kind of pissed her off, she'd said something back, and the next thing she knew Gabriella was crying and hung up on her.

She'd texted Justine later to say she was sorry. But still. Justine wasn't sure what kind of reception she'd get at the airstrip.

Assuming Gabriella even decided to show up.

Women, she thought to herself, sourly. I just don't get them at all.

"The pilot says we'll be landing soon, Ms. Hammer."

"Oh. Thanks." The stewardess' words shook her from her stupor. She put on her seatbelt and then looked out the window - the familiar New York skyline concealed by a haze of gray.
