Juvenal and Tacitus have been referenced in book 1 of the fantine section of les miserables. in researching them for context, i find myself wondering... did the philosophers of the roman empire's wax, critique it similarily to those during it's wane? if so that would depict a center point where the power cruxed and fell, that work of that nature ( Read more... )

My knee-jerk response was that they were probably too busy gossipping about senators they didn't like, but then I realized this even-more-telling bit about history's repeating cycle:

Empires are only remembered by the words of gossips.

huh, not somthing i've heard before, but in consideration, certainly to have a good portion of truth to it. not being a true student of history, just a product with random nodds to what i can find in an encyclopedia and the wikis around i wonder how much of that there is is gossip, and how much was a true look into the thoughts of the day.

i'll fool myself and think that since i was once in an apartment with a roomate that was a chid major and think i've got a chance at seeing an idea or two that could have been representative of a thought trend regarding a facet of the other ages, i suppose.
