Voting tomorrow

Jul 28, 2010 00:18

The Catalan parliament is debating a proposition tomorrow to ban bullfighting. Thankfully, the two largest political parties have given freedom of vote, so the parliament only needs 67 votes from the 135 diputats.

This is getting some part of the country hysterical. This law comes from 140,000 signatures gathered from the streets. I signed for it, ( Read more... )

Hum, I used to live close to Las Ventas when I lived in Madrid for a while. That ring can get really full for special ferias or famous bullfighters, so I'd take that with a pinch of salt. Las Ventas is also a huge place, which can seat up to 25000 people.

In any case, the thing is getting quite crazy here. Something that should be considered normal (citizens signing for a proposition to ban a type of animal cruelty) is being interpreted with all sorts of political innuendos. To me, this should be solved with a simple referendum like they do in civilized countries such as Switzerland. However, one of the things the Constitutional court ruled against Catalonia is that Catalonia can't organize referenda (to avoid a possible independence referendum in the future).

This is a mess! :)

There could be some interesting crossovers. Like the English could start bull-hunting, done with dogs and horses and pink jackets. Then there's Catalan fox-hunting, done with ribbon-bedecked swords in an arena. But really, this must stop at sheep-fucking. Men have been fucking sheep for as long as there have been sheep and men.

Best of all is the Catalan plot to eliminate Spanish influences. No doubt it will be followed by a ban on tapas and Rioja.

Well, did you know that back in 2006 there was a boycott against Catalan brands and products from certain parts of Spain? For instance, lots of companies switched from Catalan cava to whatever local cava was made (usually owned by Catalan companies anyway) or French Champagne.

Back in 1991, the Canary Islands (which are not mainland Spain) banned the corridas. Now it was just Catalonia. Spain is federal-like, so these are just like US states. Spain has 19 states and 2 have banned. You still have 17 states to go and see them being slaughtered for fun
