Seems like you'd have to use a golf ball, like a ping-pong ball would get quicksanded because not heavy enough to harden the surface.

Of course, with golf balls flying about and adrenalin running high, there's a lot of potential for dramatic injuries. The image of blood blossoming out into the non-Newtonian table is actually beautiful (in my twisted opinion), but concussions and severe black eyes are less so.

People are so apathetic about Halloween here, but no matter: I'm going as Woolf's Orlando, circa 1720. Huzzah for eighteenth-century drag (my quotidian look in freshman year)!

What will you be? And please, someone, help out a benighted English major: What is non-Newtonian liquid?

I was a beatnik, but also mono, the kissing disease. I carried arond one of those plush stuffed giant microbes, and had lipstick marks everywhere.

Non-Newtonian liquid consists of cornstarch and water, and, though liquid, you can walk on it because it becomes solid if enough force is applied to it instantaneously. If you type it into YouTube you will see amazing things!

I hope you take a picture of you being Orlando! I would dearly love to see that!
