NYCC was good. It's very rare for me to attend a convention without actually exhibiting, and I kinda cheated on this one by sharing a bit of Josh Elder's space at the Kids Love Comics booth (thanks, Josh!) and thus having a place to stand, put my books, and stash my stuff while I was there ( Read more... )

Steve will probably yell at me for saying this, but I was very underwhelmed by NYCC, and for some of the reasons you cited (I did, of course, have a great time hanging out and goofing around with all my friends).

Part of the fun of a Comic Con is gone when you have to travel (in the middle of February) to a desolate, empty area of Manhattan to a convention center that was sharing space with a travel show.

What makes San Diego so much fun-- besides the obvious-- is that the whole town seems to be in Comic Con mode all week. It feels less like a convention, and more like a party/geektastic vacation. Plus, as you said, if you need a break, you can grab lunch at Seaport Village or sneak off to the beach for a few hours, or something else. At NYCC, your options are to either stay or go home, unless you want to walk all the way to midtown and back.

Basically, it's nice to have a local Con, but it's not a show I would go to if it weren't in the immediate area. That's from a fanboy's perspective... not a professional.

I should point out that I have NONE of these uncomfortable feelings about MoCCA. None at all. So it's definitely not New York City/Hometown Con, per se...

My fav part is that I get in for like 10 bucks because I'm industry and if they knew what they payed Librarians in NY they'd cry! lol

I liked Friday a lot, Saturday was overwhelming.

Can't believe I didn't even see you this con! sounds like it all went good for you. At least I saw Dave a few times :)

NYCC makes exhibitors bring their own tables and chairs
And Freeman allows this?!?!?
Mind you, better than their insane rates per table/chair/you name it, but I thought they busted you if you brought anything in from the outside.

Yup. Freeman also pushes themselves on exhibitors to use their services, which is HUGELY convenient as they'll deliver and pick up the stuff for you. But, when you're already dropping almost a grand on the most basic of tiny booths, it seems like one way to keep the expense down slightly. Some of us don't have corporations we can charge that stuff to. :)

It was cool seeing you there.
I didn't know about the chair thing.
Most I have ever stood behind the table.
But it was worth it to see New York for the first time.
HOPEFULLY I'll get to do Mocca and see it again!

This was your first time in NYC?! I had no idea! I hope the city treated you kindly. You got pretty decent weather, for February! I do hope you'll come back, as it's usually really nice in the summer (except last year, when we had that heat wave...). :)
