I thought a "dead man's chest" was a coffin. o_O

Although (apparently), Dead Man's Chest is an island in the Caribbean where Blackbeard marooned fifteen men, leaving them only a cutlas and a "bottle of rum". Or so this website claims.

So is it the cutlass or the bottle of rum that makes up the 'sixteen?' Fifteen men marooned, one cutlass, one bottle of rum. Must have been the cutlass, the rum's accounted for!

I didn't think that chest meant coffin, I thought it meant chest as in 'treasure chest.' Although the mathematics about fitting all sixteen still apply. Plus, doesn't that mean there are seventeen men?

15 men, one cutlass ( known as a man in some legends, o_0) and one stiff. 17!

And who's the dead guy, anyway? Long John Silver? Or maybe it's his parrot...certainly explains the dead thing, although I like the squashing theory. Can you get parrots drunk?
