Medium: Film
Fandom: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Subject: Sybok
Title: God's Plan Involves Me Getting My Own Planet
Warnings: Sacrilege. The song "Making Things Up Again" contains mentions of child sexual abuse, female genital cutting, and bestiality, but none of those things are in the body of this post.

Young Sybok starts preaching his religious philosophy on Vulcan.
“Making Things Up Again” - The Book of Mormon OBCR
SAREK:
You're making things up again, Arnold

SYBOK:
But it worked, dad!

SAREK:
You're stretching the truth again,
And you know it

SURAK:
Don't be a Fibbing Fran, Arnold.

SYBOK:
Joseph Smith...?

SURAK AND SAREK:
Because a lie is a lie.

SYBOK:
Its not a lie!

VULCAN HIGH COUNCIL:
You're making things up again, Arnold!

SYBOK:
Oh, conscience!

VULCAN HIGH COUNCIL:
You're taking the holy word
And adding fiction!
Be careful how you proceed, Arnold.
When you fib, there's a price.

Sybok knowingly sacrifices his relationship with Sarek for what he feels is right.
“Father & Son” - Cat Stevens
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them you know not me.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

Sybok is kicked off Vulcan by the high council.
“Tower of Babble” - Godspell 2011 RBCR
(Spoken) I honor and love you, but I shall obey God rather than you. And as long as I have life and strength, I shall never cease from the practice and teaching of philosophy.
Wherefore, O men of Athens,
I say to you:
Therefore, acquit me or not
But whichever you do
I shall never alter my ways
Never adjust my approach to this maze
Never reform til the end of my days
Even if I have to die many times.
-
And despite the abolition
by the current inquisition
of any intuition
that they don't choose
when it comes to God
I find I can't believe that He designed
a human being with a mind
he's not supposed to use.

Out on his own, Sybok gathers followers by taking away their pain, becoming something of a prophet... and terrorist leader.
“Not the Same” - Ben Folds
You took the word and made it heard
And eased the people's pain and for that
You were idolized, immortalized
And you were not the same after that

Sybok explains his mission to the crew of the Enterprise, bringing most of them over to his side.
“I Believe” - The Book of Mormon OBCR
I believe
That God has a plan for all of us.
I believe
That plan involves
Me getting my own planet.
-
And now I can feel the excitement.
This is the moment I was born to do.
And I feel so incredible
to be sharing my faith with you.

Sybok, notorious Vulcan heretic, makes it to Sha-Ka-Ree... having been sent by the Devil himself. Or at least a god-like alien who lies and wants to steal a starship. That's two commandments broken right there.
“Grace for Sale” - The Devil's Carnival
A sheep has left the fold
Hoofbeats go a trotting, trotting
Up to Heaven bold
At the gates a knocking, knocking
Sheep in wolfish clothes
Holy jaws are dropping
Up in Heaven's fold
Plant my hooves, my hooks, my books

Sybok reunites with Spock after many, many years of separation and sacrifices himself so that his brother can continue to forge his own unique path as a Vulcan.
“Chase the Morning” - Repo! The Genetic Opera
I want, I want to finally meet you
Something real to cling to.
Leave you with the hope that
You will go do all you're meant to,
All I've failed to.
In you is a world of promise.
We have both been kept in bondage,
But you can learn from all my failures.
