I guess it's because Square don't have the copyright to Sakimoto's music. That's probably the wrong guess, but Sakimoto's been able to release soundtracks under his own label in Japan. Certainly he's done his own concerts without any corporate involvement from Square or any other video game company

So there might be something going on there. Maybe.

I suspected that might be it but for Square to have hired him on a contract basis that did not include exclusive ownership of the works produced... I've never heard of an arrangement like that before. I'd be surprised if this is the case but who knows.
