Ah don't worry...you didn't offend me at all! Actually, I was just afraid I might have offended some other people here, by taking the initiative to friend them without asking first. As for "friends only" I was kind of wondering if adding such people to my friends list would allow me to see their journal entries, or would I only be able to see their journal entries if they friended me back.
Continuing the neurotic ramble...on the one hand I feel like I must be getting old or something if this stuff just doesn't make sense to me right away. On the other hand, I have a freakin' master's degree in technical communication and a certificate in user centered design, and if someone like me can have problems understanding such details, then something ain't right with the way the site is designed! (Um, case in point...my inability to figure out how to post anonymously until the "More Options" button was pointed out to me).
Do you ever post on fanfiction.net? Now there's a hard site to figure out site if ever I saw one. I screwed up posting my first chaptered story there because I had so much trouble figuring out what to do!
Some people think that you should ask permission before friending someone.
If someone's LJ banner says "Friends-Only," that means that all of their posts are friends-locked, to keep random passerby from reading whatever they post. In most cases, you just say "hey thot U were sooo kewll!!!1! can I frnd plz?!?!?" and they'll friend you back so that you can read their stuff.
Another trend which is amusing is the use of the word "Friend," which is overloaded.
In day-to-day usage: "Friend: Person whom you are fond of and like to spend tiem with, a companion."
In LJ-usage: "Friend: Person that you let read friends-only posts on your blog, a person unlikely to share your 'secrets' or spam your blog, person you'd like to see show up in your friends-list."
