Help please! Lend me your eyes

I'm thinking of revising an old story I posted here long ago to see if I can't get it published in some magazine or other (this is called Breaking Into Print). This presents me with a familiar difficulty, which in this case is more acute than usual. I find it impossible to read my own work with the eyes of a first-time reader; I'm on too intimate a ( Read more... )

Actually, I was thinking about this story of yours recently, wondering why you didn't send it off. Try F&SF (I heard their rejection is really fast). Realms of Fantasy is another professional market, though slightly fluffier in tone than what you're aiming for.

I am not sure I remember, but I think I found the ending semi-transparent back in the day.

Good luck with this.

Thanks! Semi-transparency is what I was aiming for.

I tried Strange Horizons, but they didn't like it. I've so far been too lazy to send it to F&SF (they don't take electronic submissions) but will get off my butt and buy a letter-sized envelope soon. Cabinet des Fees looks like a possibility, too. I hadn't heard of Realms of Fantasy, and their server seems to be down (strangled by fluff?).

Check out ralan.com and duotrope.com for markets. There are many that take e-subs, but I don't think you should send this story to non-paying markets - that does not constitute breaking into the market; you'll just be wasting your time.

Also there are places on-line where people much more knowledgeable than yours truly critique your work. I would ask Shweta (Eve's student who is also Clarion graduate), but she has been sick for a while and not reading anything.

What's wrong with non-paying markets? It's not like I'm going to make money from this story, I just want to put it somewhere it can be read by people who might like it.

Yes, a week ago. I suppose it's deep in F&SF's slush pile at the moment.

Great! Good luck!
The F&SF slush pile is reputed to be fast-moving. Let me know how it goes!
