Doctor Who 5x10 Reaction Post

I really liked that. It was probably my favourite of the season so far. Well played, Richard Curtis. I'm sure _thirty2flavors already mentioned it in her review, but after the episode we were like "Who even wrote this?? Some due called Richard Curtis??" And so we looked it up and it was like OH ONLY THE WRITER OF BRIDGET JONES, LOVE ACTUALLY, AND NOTTING HILL, I ( Read more... )

Oh, that Richard Curtis! That would explain the (awesome) presence of Bill Nighy.

Eleven is truly adorkable. You've got to love a strap-on device. Er, that came out sounding bad, didn't it? And from a "two-headed, smelly" godmother, at that!

It seems like Amy was already a fan of Van Gogh, which is why she was so excited to see that particular exhibit. That or she's more of an art-museum fan than a historical-museum fan.

Oddly, one of my favorite moments was when the monster was dying. It'd spent most of the episode trying to kill them, but in the end, it was just scared--blind and abandoned on an alien world. The way the Doctor was so gentle with it was very touching.

AHAHahaha, you said strap-on! LOL!

That bit mad me so sad, with the alien monster. Poor old Beaky.

YES, THAT Richard Curtis. I was so impressed when I found out. Way to go scoring that, DW.

Eleven has grown on me so much despite... not... really having a character arc. Matt Smith is just so adorable, I don't know how you could not love him.

Awww, yeah, I liked that bit! Though I have to say that it was a little awkward to watch the Doctor pet empty air.

I am averting my eyes so I don't accidently read this post yet since I haven't seen the episode yet (I'm about to watch it as soon as I post this comment) but your pre comment caught my attention.

First of all I am now excited to watch this, and second of all, Richard Curtis also wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral, so yeah, DEFINITELY a big deal. I remember reading ages ago that he was writing an episode this season and being excited about it, since Notting Hill is like my most favourite movie of all time (save "Anne of Green Gables" - I even have the script in book form complete with comments and notes for Richard Curtis himself.), but then I forgot all about it. So YAY!

Okay I'm going to run off and watch now before I accidentally read something I shouldn't. But I'll be back to comment on what I'm sure are excellent thinky thoughts as soon as I've watched the episode.

*squee* I'm excited now!

LOL I had NO IDEA WHO IT WAS until the episode finished and it was.... surprisingly good. But yeah, turns out that Richard Curtis is kind of a big deal. Well done scoring him, Moffat.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this episode. On one hand, I feel like it was pretty pointless. By the end of the episode, I didn't really felt like I got to know Eleven or Amy better and the monster plot didn't seem that important either because was killed with more than 10 minutes left in the show.

And then it just felt a little bit too pointless and hopeless because the Doctor and Amy didn't really change anything. So idk idk.

Maybe I should watch it again because it was very very pretty.

This is pretty much EXACTLY how I felt when it had ended. However, I did appreciate the way in which his depression was handled, Amy looked very lovely through much of this episode, and Eleven was adorkable too.

Applesauce, anyone?

Yeah, Kali and I were saying that it was a little frustrating that Van Gogh got so much characterization when Amy and Eleven.... mostly did not. BUT there was some good emotional continuity from the previous ep and I really did *feel* this episode in a way I haven't really felt any of the others, so I accept it. Well done, Richard Curtis.

You know, thinking more about it, I think the reason I didn't love this episode, is that the plot was completely disconnected from the character story. Like the invisible monster was just a plot device to throw Amy, Eleven and Vincent together. Whereas in an episode like "Father's Day", the focus is on the characters, but the plot of the monsters feeding on the hole in time or whatever is integral to the plot.

Hmm, I could see that. The monster was a bit plot device-y. Not that I didn't enjoy watching it bat Eleven around like a chew-toy. XD

Word to all of this. I've always been a sucker for Bridget Jones/Notting Hill/Love Actually so knowing that the guy who wrote them wrote this ep sheds a lot of light on why it worked for me so much (and why Bill Nighy was there, lol.)

Omg, Rory, come back to meeeee. DDD:

Ack, I know :/
