An essay I wrote eight years ago, now. It is very very flawed, but it is the reason I eventually decided that I wanted to go into literary criticism. :-)
I love that ending! Indeed Frodo's hero and ours - just as Frodo was Sam's hero - and I would say Hero of the Age also for there would be no Fourth Age without him. And you quote from the best scene in the whole book - the reunion in the Tower - love that! So right that Frodo was Sam's child by the end. You bring up some points that I hadn't thought of before - that Sam was the one who saved the Shire and that the three volumes end with quotes from him. That he was a gardener points to his nurturing nature, not just of plants and flowers, but of his master's soul and indeed the 'soul' of the Shire. What a lovely essay!
