Xmas lights are run in parallel series. What happened is a wire failed. When the wires fail, I take all the bulbs off and then trash them. The bulbs should be fine. Modern xmas lights should stay lit even if a few bulbs blow out. I am not decorating this year, and I usually dont decorate the outside of the house.
