Through the Looking Glass - [open, Marlena?]

The hum of the transporter beam dissipated, and it took Kirk a moment to realize he was not, as expected, on the platform in his own transporter room. A room that should have been identical to the one he had left ( Read more... )

Marlena was still slightly dazed. No one had bothered to tell her that Pike's Spock was on board. For all she knew, he'd been aboard for days. It was slowly filtering through her brain that it wasn't her Spock at all; he looked more like this universe's native Spock than like her own, although apparently the goatee was a preference common to all Spocks of the Empire.

Now that was an odd thought. How many universes were there that had a Terran Empire, anyway? How many of them had Spocks? That sort of science wasn't her field, thankfully, as it made her head hurt.

She was still pondering the idea, distracted by the concept of multiple Spocks, all wearing goatees, when she rounded a corner and bumped smack into someone brilliantly golden.

he collision was a surprise, as careful as Kirk thought he had been. Perhaps he was more disoriented than he had thought--a factor to take into consideration. It took him a moment, therefore to realize that this could not be the woman he knew, the woman who should be on his ship, waiting in his room, though he had entertained multiple thoughts of replacing her.

He opened his mouth to say her name, not sure if it was relief or reprimand, when he realized his potential mistake. He backed up by holding her at arm's length, his hand on a shoulder.

"Lieutenant Moreau," he said, tempering his normal response and counting on his air of command to carry him through the bluff. Clearly a new universe, with yet different uniforms. And yet Marlena, here. Stood to reason "he" was here, too, or someone with his face. "You seem to be in quite a hurry."

Her mouth worked silently for a second as she tried to kick her brain into gear. She'd just seen Jim beam away with the rescue party. And now here he was, wearing the gold tunic that Spock had stripped off of him before marooning him. Well. Shit.

"Captain Kirk," she said, somewhat breathlessly. It took her a moment to find the next words. "I wasn't expecting to see you here. I, er...I'm sorry for bumping into you, sir." She stared at him a moment longer. Was it really the Jim from her universe? He looked just like him, and had recognized her...she couldn't stop a grin from spreading across her face. Her day had just gotten so much better.

She knew him. And he was captain. That was fortunate, but so far, no proof that he was anywhere but yet another perverse universe where Lieutenants smiled widely at their commanding officers, and ran into them without fear of reprimand. Another crop of idiots, weakened by concern for their fellow man ( ... )
