My life is probably not like your life

On tonight's walk, Lynx, Xita, Riddle, and Oda brought down a deer in the field in front of the house. She was obviously badly hurt and stressed, and I had to find a way to humanely kill her (instead of letting her die from stress/injuries/dog wounds). She had a broken shoulder--probably from a car hit. Ended up learning to quarter a deer on the ( Read more... )

Your appropriate icon is appropriate!

So, were they trying to help with the feed bills for the next little while? Breaking down deer is hard work, hope you have help or a big freezer.

It was a little deer. Honestly, I didn't really know what I was doing and didn't/don't have appropriate tools. I had a fileting knife that was very sharp that I had used for the the great chicken slaughter day. I ended up quartering the deer and giving 4 dogs each one quarter. I also cut off the neck--gonna give that to Riddle tomorrow.

I wimped out and didn't gut it and I am going to probably waste a lot of meat and just throw the carcass and head out tomorrow at the dump. But it's just in trash bag in the back of my truck, so we'll see if I get inspired to try to figure out how to get some of the back meat, ribs, heart, etc tomorrow. I just don't have the experience or tools. :/

When I left them in their kennels with their dinners, Lynx was guarding his quarter, Hunter was eating, Xita had hers in the dog house and was eating, and Oda was pretending it wasn't there.

I don't know if this is true, but I was told that if you don't bleed the carcass right away, the meat will go bad very quickly. I'd stick with your plan of dumping it. Sounds like you got a lot of meat out of it as it is.

I have heard that as well (and also have no idea whether or not it's actually true).

Your dogs are hardcore. O.o

I joked about our pack we (christalynn and I) went hiking with could take down a deer today.

It's kind of surprising that yours did, still! I actually.. wouldn't mind it if mine did, as long as they weren't hurt. That meat would be very welcomed.

I think the only reason that they got aholt of her (the proper way to say it, here in Virginia!), is that she had a broken shoulder (I think there were 2 broken bones)--so she must have been hit by a car and in bad shape already.

My Amstaffs are in awe. Wow. I think they dream of such things.

I'm pretty sure that Lynx, at least, is going to be hoping for a repeat for the next 6 months....

Wait, so how did you kill her? Shoot her... or..?

I'm glad you were able to end her suffering. Poor thing.

I don't have a handgun (at this time!). And the big pocketknife (4" blade) wasn't sharp enough to even penetrate the skin. So I had to go back to the house a second time, and a friend suggested a hammer. So, I had a 4 lb mallet and used that between the ears. It was fast, at least.

She had a badly broken shoulder, so she was in bad shape before the dogs got her, too. :(

Seems like a much better way to go than stumbling around the woods in agony. I don't know if I could have done it myself, but the cops out here will gladly come out and shoot one for you (but then you can't keep the meat so...)

I'm amazed! Oh, if only my dogs could do this! Bringing home their own supper would make me smile :P haha... then again, mine would just chase, if they could, and leave me all alone only to come back later with no dinner!
