Yancey

I figured I made such a bad attempt at explaining what went on with Philip Yancey as discussed in the sermon, The Spirit Who Comforts that I’d revert to the source itself for more clarity.

Dave:  '… Somebody who’s written a lot about this whole subject of pain & the distance of God & the reality of God is Philip Yancey… And yes, he’s written about ( Read more... )

Pain does indeed tell us we're alive, and what is also interesting is that in paralysed people with spinal cord injury above T6 (that's about halfway down your chest)is that if they experience pain that they can't feel, their body will tell they they can't feel it, by triggering a response called Autonomic Dysreflexia: they get a pounding headache (apparently worse than a migraine, according to people who experience both), their blood pressure rises, their skin above injury becomes blotchy, they start experiencing more spasms, they sweat profusely and if untreated they either suffer a huge stroke, or they die. Common causes include fractures, bladder (ie blocked catheter), bowels (constipation), pressure sores, late pregnancy (they'd need a caesarian to bring the BP down), ingrown toenails... basically, any painful stimulus. Weird, isn't it?

Don't forget though, the absence of pain doesn't tell us we're not alive!

Thanks for the explanation though m'dear :-D all makes more sense now!!
